  • Fortnite is giving players the chance to earn the Season 8 Battle Pass for free. All you have to do is log in, play Fortnite, and complete a handful of limited-time challenges, and bingo: You’ll have an entire season of Battle Pass rewards to fight for, and some instant outfit unlocks. Here’s the deal. Right now Fortnite is throwing a special event called “Share the Love.” The Share the Love event will last until February 27. For the duration of the event, players will have unique “Overtime” challenges to complete in addition to the normal daily challenges. If you can complete 13 of these Overtime challenges before the Share the Love event expires on February 27, you get a free Battle Pass. So what’s the big deal? If you’re a free Fortnite player and you’ve never paid for a Battle Pass, you may be wondering if it’s worth it or not. The short version is, if you play Fortnite on a daily or near-daily basis, then a Battle Pass definitely does open up many more rewards for you. Unlocking a Battle Pass also gives you instant access to a few season-specific outfits and cosmetics, some of which may evolve and change as you play the game. In addition to the instant unlocks, you’ll have way more challenges to complete than a typical free player, and some of those challenge rewards yield even more outfits and cosmetics. Basically, all of the coolest gear and emotes are locked behind the Battle Pass as challenge rewards, so it gives you even more incentive to play a few rounds of Fortnite. If you’re planning on getting a free Fortnite Battle Pass, you better start playing now! The clock is ticking on those overtime challenges.

  • Final Fantasy IX is now available for the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. This is one of the most celebrated entries in the long-running Final Fantasy series, and was a huge departure from the more modern set and settings of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII. You can download it now for $20.99 USD. “Zidane and the Tantalus Theater Troupe have kidnapped Princess Garnet, the heir of Alexandria. To their surprise, however, the princess herself yearned to escape the castle. Through a series of unusual circumstances, she and her personal guard, Steiner, fall in with Zidane and set out on an incredible journey.” It’s a simple setup — classic, even. Here we have a devil-may-care thief, an unconventional princess with a taste for danger, an overly zealous bodyguard sworn to loyalty, and a young, insecure mage. All of these characters come together through desperate circumstances, and get swept up in a grand adventure that none of them could have foreseen. But there’s nothing classic about the enhancements you’ll enjoy while playing Final Fantasy IX on your Xbox or Switch. Square Enix has included various cheats and boosters that will alleviate grinding, which is perfect for players who just want to blow through the story. Autosaving, maxed out gil, battle boosts, increased battle and play speed, and instant skill mastery are among the most useful of these boosters. Do keep in mind that both versions suffer from an annoying glitch that resets the background music after every random encounter. This means that you may never here more than the first 15-20 seconds of a song while roaming an area where random encounters trigger, but thankfully, one of the boosters enables you to disable random encounters altogether.

  • Super Mario Maker 2 has been revealed, and will be coming to the Nintendo Switch in June 2019. This is a sequel to the massively popular Super Mario Maker, which launched for the Wii U in 2015. Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS came out a year later, but lacked key sharing features. In Super Mario Maker 2, as in previous games, players will be given the templates, tools, and assets they need to create their very own Super Mario stages. If you can dream up an incredible — or incredibly hard — Super Mario level, you will more than likely be able to create it in Super Mario Maker 2. The tools in the first game were incredibly robust, and I’m expecting some impressive iterations and improvements for the sequel. You’ll notice that you can create stages in multiple styles. Judging from the footage in the trailer, it looks like assets and worlds from Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros., and Super Mario 3D World will be included. Each of these worlds will come with its own unique set power-ups and features. Super Mario Maker 2 also includes the ability to add slopes to your stages (a series first). We have a definite release window for Super Mario Maker 2, but Nintendo confirmed that multiple features are still in production. There’s still a lot to learn and discover, so stay tuned. • Tetris 99 is bringing Tetris Battle Royale to the Nintendo Switch. Yes, you read that correctly. In Tetris 99, 99 players will compete against each other in a frantic, tetromino-stacking contest to be the last man standing. The game is completely free for all Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, and you can download it right now. Here’s the official description from Nintendo Direct follow-up press release: “The iconic puzzle game Tetris arrives, but with an online experience like no other. In this next entry in the storied puzzle franchise, 99 players compete together until only one is left standing. Nintendo Switch Online members (membership sold separately) can battle for dominance in this free-to-download software. The Nintendo Switch exclusive will be available to download starting today, and players can look forward to battling it out in upcoming online events.” For those of you who don’t fancy jumping out of airships and shooting guns, Tetris 99 could very well provide the kind of Battle Royale rush that you’ve been craving. We love Battle Royale games because they provide endless opportunities to feel like absolute winners. When you know that you’re competing against not one opponent, but several dozens, even placing within the top 20 feels like a massive accomplishment. Why should shooting game fans get to hog all of the adrenaline and glory? As for the “upcoming online events,” we can only guess what Nintendo has in store. We’d love the chance to compete for Nintendo eShop gold coins or special avatar rewards, but we’re trying to keep our expectations in check for now. For more: link in bio.
