Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

August 29, 2017

Shigeru Miyamoto came out with a gun in Ubisoft’s G-rated version of Devolver presentation. He talked about respecting Ubisoft while looking at them as rivals. He said he has Rabbids figures on his desk.ubisoft e3

Then we cut to the Rabbids creator who had tears in his eyes and will definitely become meme material in the days to come.

ubisoft e3

They’ve been working on the game for over three years.

It’s a ‘tactical adventure’, exclusive to the Switch. Real-time movement on the overworld, but switches to turn-based strategic battles.

ubisoft e3

Lots of X-COM type mechanics were on display as well as combo setups and other abilities.

Assassin’s Creed Origins

The trailer focused on the Egyptian landscape, animals, tribes, and the architecture you’ll be climbing on.

ubisoft e3

They showed some more gameplay demo, but nothing beyond what we already saw at Microsoft’s Conference.

The Crew 2 – Early 2018 (multi-plat)

ubisoft e3

Open-world set in the USA, driving just about everything you can race. Bikes, planes, cars, boats, etc.

ubisoft e3

They showed street races, off-roading through mountain ranges, boat racing (that looked really nice), and plane racing through cities around skyscrapers and under bridges.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole – Oct 17th

ubisoft e3

This game looks to be shaping up extremely well. Trey Parker and Matt Stone spoke about the difficulties of game development when working on Stick of Truth. That game still turned out exceptionally well, and with one-game’s experience under their belts I have extremely high expectations for this one.

Transference – Spring 2018

Elijah Wood promoting a creepy VR game. They kept it quite mysterious, but could be very promising. The theme centers around downloading/uploading traumatic memories.ubisoft e3

Skull and Bones – Fall 2018 (multi plat)

ubisoft e3

From the work done on Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, comes the stand-alone pirate game, Skull and Bones. Online play, multiple seasons, and multiple PVP modes will make up the experience..

They showed gameplay of 5v5 ship combat, with the most loot deciding the winner. Managing sail winds and positioning, going inland vs open sea.

The ships have different strengths, some being great up close with battering rams, others from long-range.

You can sign up for beta access.

I find Ubisoft’s single player games bland, but they’ve had great multiplayer ideas lately (R6 Siege, For Honor, Skull & Bones).

Just Dance 2018 – October all consoles

ubisoft e3

Dance mashup with singing. It was short and fine.

South Park Phone Destroyer – 2017

Strategic battle with all kinds of crazy South Park nonsense.

ubisoft e3

It looks like a take on the gameplay of Fractured but Whole, modified to a smaller scale, with character cards and cooldowns.

Starlink Battle for Atlas – Fall 2018 (Xb1, Ps4, Switch)

Control a team of starpilots, building toys to upgrade and customize your in-game ship. Collectables will be physical and digital. It looks like you can transition from space to atmosphere seamlessly, which could be a very cool overlooked mechanic. Or maybe I was just fooled by a trailer.

ubisoft e3

I’d love a new sci-fi dog fighter, but I hope I can play without buying or building any toys.

STEEP – Olympic DLC – Dec. 5th

ubisoft e3

If you like STEEP, Ubisoft will be dropping a rather large amount of new Olympic-themed sports and modes. Players can compete in a virtual Winter Olympics just before the real ones taking place in South Korea. A long list of new sports were displayed at rapid speed throughout the trailer.

Far Cry 5

Players will explore a vast rugged, southern area of the USA, encountering a crazed cult leader and his cronies. A small town is overrun but the player and their guns for hire are there to save the day.

ubisoft e3

ubisoft e3

Far Cry 5 looks to continue the series love of vehicles, open-world battles, and bad-ass personality. The gameplay trailer focused on stealth approaches and utilizing your merc for hire. A sniper, dog, and flyboy dropping ‘death from above’ wreaked havoc on the culty bad dudes.

Beyond Good and Evil 2

This was Ubisoft’s mic drop moment. A gorgeous CGI trailer showed off a fascinating world of animals acting like humans, living alongside humans. Lots of foul language and gangster vs police themes. The world looks very deep and detailed as the trailer showed futuristic and diverse cities and interesting landscapes combining a hodge-podge of cultures.

ubisoft e3

However, no gameplay was shown, and the creator mentioned it would be an online world.

They spoke about exploring new worlds, helming gigantic ships, and the technlolgy they’ve worked on to create a ‘seamless online playground’. They did mention you can play alone or with friends.

This was a very Sony E3 moment. Capitalizing on nostalgia with a flashy trailer and zero real gameplay. I was a huge fan of the original game and wasn’t holding my breath for a sequel. It’s also very strange to see the Guy Ritchie harsh tone they took when the original was about Jade looking after orphans and fighting a government conspiracy.

Mathew is a huge fan of Space, Strategy, and Shadowrun (Genesis version is #1). When it comes to games and films, he’d much rather experience a 10/10 classic from yesteryear than a 6/10 modern blandfest. He does feel we’re living in a gaming golden age with the power of indie developers at an all-time high, but wishes AAA publishers would take more risks. Mat believes it’s only a matter of time before the pendulum swings the other way and new ideas take their rightful place above reboots.
