A newer chipset delivered little gaming advantage in Linus Tech Tips’ comparison of AMD’s re-engineered Ryzen 7 5800X3D on X370 and X570 motherboards. Across the tested games, the older AM4 board produced closely matched results—though achieving optimized memory clocks presented a challenge.
New chipset, negligible gaming gains
Both systems used a GeForce RTX 4070 Ti and DDR4 memory, keeping their central gaming components consistent while changing the motherboard generation.
The reported comparison covered Cyberpunk 2077, Counter-Strike 2, and Cities: Skylines II. Each title showed little or negligible performance difference between the older and newer platforms when paired with the same processor.
Within this particular selection of hardware and games, changing the chipset generation did not translate into a meaningful gaming-performance uplift. That is a notable result for players assessing how much motherboard age affects this CPU’s gaming capabilities.
Memory tuning remains an important qualifier
The similar gaming results did not mean the older hardware pairing was free from complications. Linus Tech Tips encountered difficulty getting the memory to operate at optimized clock speeds when using the earlier motherboard with the re-engineered processor.
That setup issue provides important context for the comparison. Gaming performance remained closely matched in the tested titles, but optimized memory clocks were difficult to achieve with the older motherboard and CPU pairing.
