Persona nearly vanished after its second entry. Atlus’ Kazuhisa Wada has revealed that the long gap following Persona 2 left the company without plans for another game, turning its eventual revival into a decisive moment for the series.
Wada described Persona 3 as the critical point in determining whether the franchise would continue. Without a new project, he said Persona appeared likely to disappear.
Bringing Persona back
Atlus spent an extended period with no plan for a third instalment. Wada said the studio ultimately saw a necessity to bring the series back rather than let it fade away.
That made the revival more than a routine sequel. It was a chance to restore a dormant property whose future was uncertain, with the next game becoming a key decision point for Persona as a continuing series.
Rethinking Atlus’ audience
The comeback also prompted Atlus to reconsider how it was perceived. Wada said the company needed to change its image of being fixated on core fans, and it looked to the Tales games as a reference during that process.
That detail adds another layer to Persona’s return: Atlus was not only reviving the series, but also reassessing its core-fan image and studying another established RPG franchise for direction.
