Seven years after launch, Outer Wilds still carries a wonderfully direct message: “Be curious on your journey.” As Polygon reports, the line comes from Bells, an ancient Nomai in Mobius Digital’s 2019 time-loop exploration game.
It is more than a memorable piece of dialogue. Curiosity sits at the centre of an adventure shaped by discovery, experimentation, and the consequences of pushing into the unknown.
Every loop invites another experiment
Death or another consequence sends the player back to the beginning of each 22-minute loop, Polygon notes. That structure provides repeated opportunities to investigate a different location, test an idea, or simply see what happens when caution is abandoned.
The reset keeps each journey finite, but its invitation remains open: try something, observe the outcome, then begin again.
Even burnt marshmallows matter
The achievement list reinforces that playful approach. Polygon highlights rewards for eating burnt marshmallows, travelling as fast and far as possible within a loop, and examining equipment beside ordinary campfires.
These are unusual detours rather than conventional heroic feats. Yet they fit neatly with Bells’ advice, encouraging players to poke at the game’s smaller details as readily as its wider exploration.
Years later, “Be curious on your journey” remains a concise summary of what Outer Wilds asks from its players.
Which strange experiment or unexpected discovery best captured that spirit during your journey?
