Kadokawa and Dwango are winding down the NicoNico app on Nintendo Switch. According to Siliconera, the app will be removed from the Nintendo eShop on February 28, 2027, before support ends and the app becomes unavailable on March 31, 2027.
The shutdown affects the Switch app rather than NicoNico accounts themselves. Siliconera reports that users will retain access to their accounts and lists through NicoNico’s browser version after the console app closes. For anyone using Switch as their main way to access the service, however, March 31 is the hard cutoff.
Dwango and Kadokawa Group are also preparing a campaign that will let eligible users review their activity with the app, per Siliconera. Eligibility covers anyone who used NicoNico on Switch between July 13, 2017 and February 28, 2027. It additionally includes people who access NicoNico from a computer or smartphone between October 1, 2026 and February 28, 2027.
NicoNico’s Switch app first became available in 2017, Siliconera notes, giving the console version a run of nearly a decade by the time service concludes. No NicoNico app for Nintendo Switch 2 has been announced, so the browser version will be the confirmed route for maintaining access to existing accounts and lists once the Switch app shuts down.
