Kingdom Hearts 4 Embraces Pixar’s Coco – A New World Awaits

Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts 4 is set to explore a new world inspired by Pixar’s Coco, as confirmed during Disney’s D23 Entertainment Showcase. This announcement marks a significant addition to the long-awaited sequel, providing players with a vibrant new gameplay destination after years of anticipation.

The D23 footage introduces Coco’s colorful Land of the Dead, where Miguel’s grandfather Héctor warns of a “Final Death” for souls forgotten by the living. This theme resonates deeply within the Kingdom Hearts series, which has always explored concepts of memory, loss, and the connections between worlds.

Sora Joins the Fight in Día de los Muertos Style

In the trailer, Sora teams up with Miguel and Héctor to battle a wave of Heartless, sporting custom skull face paint that reflects the world’s Día de los Muertos aesthetic. He also acquires a Coco-themed Keyblade, ensuring that this visit is more than just a cinematic experience; it fully integrates into the Kingdom Hearts gameplay style.

Coco provides the emotional and visual elements that the series excels at: a fantastical setting with unique rules, a poignant family narrative centered on remembrance, and a lively atmosphere that shifts to danger with the arrival of the Heartless. Sora’s journey into this world allows him to engage with Miguel and Héctor’s story, creating a compelling narrative thread.

Watch the newly released for a first look at the world in action.

Donald and Goofy Search for Sora

Interestingly, Donald and Goofy do not accompany Sora in the Coco segment. Instead, the trailer shifts focus to the duo as they search for him in the Underworld and around Quadratum, the Tokyo-inspired hub city associated with Kingdom Hearts 4. This narrative split adds depth, highlighting Sora’s journey in a world where remembrance influences fate while his companions navigate familiar fantasy and urban landscapes.

Major Gameplay Reveal Since 2022

The Coco segment represents the largest gameplay reveal for Kingdom Hearts 4 since its announcement in 2022. Alongside this, Disney’s D23 presentation provided a release window and announced a Kingdom Hearts anime series. However, the standout moment remains the translation of one of Pixar’s most emotionally impactful films into a playable world.

For players, the critical question is whether the Land of the Dead will allow its themes to shape the adventure. A Coco world should offer more than just a Keyblade and a costume change; it has the potential to challenge Sora to confront the significance of being remembered and the implications of being left behind.

Which Coco moment are you most excited to experience with Sora, Miguel, and Héctor when Kingdom Hearts 4 launches?
