Kaiju No. 8 officially returns in three weeks after a year-long wait, but Production I.G. is not continuing the main anime’s storyline. As reported by Polygon, the studio is bringing the Defense Force back on September 5 with Kaiju No. 8: Narumi’s Week at Work, a four-episode short anime centered around First Division captain Gen Narumi.
This is the catch: Kafka Hibino’s larger story remains on hold. This September return takes a smaller, more comedic route, focusing on the strongest soldier in the Defense Force as he navigates the less glamorous aspects of being a captain instead of battling monsters.
Narumi Takes Center Stage in a Workplace Comedy
Kaiju No. 8 follows Kafka, a 32-year-old sanitation worker who dreams of joining the Defense Force before gaining the power to transform into a formidable humanoid kaiju. While the core series features large battles and wild transformations, its real appeal often lies in the crew’s workplace dynamics and personality clashes.
Narumi’s Week at Work emphasizes that comedic side. Narumi, a skilled fighter and captain of the First Division, is portrayed as arrogant, distractible, and more interested in video games than in routine leadership duties. Each of the four episodes will explore another facet of his increasingly chaotic work life.
This series is an original story, not a direct adaptation of Naoya Matsumoto’s manga. Kizuku Watanabe drafted the narrative after working on the comedic Kaiju No. 8: Relax spinoff manga, while Shigeyuki Miya returns as director, Tetsuya Nishio handles character designs, and Production I.G. produces the shorts.
Weekly Episodes in September
The first episode premieres on September 5, followed by weekly episodes on September 12, September 19, and September 26. In Japan, the episodes will air Saturdays at 8 p.m. JST on TOHO Animation’s YouTube channel. Crunchyroll will stream each episode internationally on the same day, with new episodes available in the United States at 7 a.m. EDT.
The short format is the key trade-off. Fans waiting for the next major development in Kafka’s story will not find it in these episodes. Instead, the series offers a focused character detour: four weeks with a powerhouse captain whose biggest challenges may involve paperwork, responsibility, or the temptation to play video games.
This approach makes better use of the wait than a simple recap would have. With much of the original anime’s creative team involved, the series aims to maintain the balance that makes Kaiju No. 8 appealing: large-scale monster battles on one side and a workplace filled with unpredictable characters on the other.
