Kingdom Hearts 4 is set to launch in late 2027, with Square Enix and Disney unveiling its first Disney world at D23 2026: the Land of the Dead from Pixar’s 2017 film Coco. The new sizzle reel confirms that the action-RPG will release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
The trailer showcases Sora entering the Land of the Dead, where he meets Miguel and battles Heartless during a performance. He also unlocks a new Keyblade form inspired by the world. One sequence features Sora riding the transformed Keyblade on rails while fighting a larger Heartless, highlighting the series’ signature dynamic combat.
While Sora explores the Land of the Dead, Donald and Goofy travel to the Underworld from Hercules to meet Hades. However, Hades reveals that Sora is not there, introducing a divided-party storyline rather than a straightforward reunion.
The trailer also returns to Quadratum, where Sora sees what appear to be his friends’ spirits before collapsing. Large Heartless attack in another scene, and a second Keyblade wielder appears alongside him. Strelitzia, introduced in Kingdom Hearts Union χ, also makes an appearance. Meanwhile, Mickey Mouse is shown in a library, commenting, “This is a lot of new information.” This line reflects the complexity of the story, which seems focused on Sora’s separation from his friends rather than treating Disney worlds as simple backdrops.
The Land of the Dead is a strong choice for the first revealed world because its themes of family, memory, music, and loss align closely with Sora’s ongoing quest to reunite with his friends. The introduction of a world-specific Keyblade form and rail-based combat suggests that each setting will influence both story and gameplay.
The late 2027 release date marks an end to years of anticipation. The challenge for the full game will be to make its worlds feel integral to the narrative and gameplay, where Disney stories, Keyblade transformations, and the overarching Kingdom Hearts mystery intersect.
