A developer has traced a startup crash affecting some Windows 11 players to Smart App Control blocking an unsigned game file. In an official Steam announcement, the developer identified the Windows security feature as the cause of the crash, which displays the message “Fatal error: Failed to load il2cpp” when affected players try to launch the game.
The technical explanation centres on GameAssembly.dll, a core dynamic-link library required by the game’s Unity IL2CPP backend. Because the game has not yet been code-signed, Smart App Control currently treats that file as untrusted and prevents it from loading. That makes the DLL’s security classification—not simply the error message itself—the key detail in the developer’s diagnosis.
To address the block, the developer is obtaining a code-signing certificate for the game’s executable and DLL files. The stated aim is to prevent future blocks, with the fix targeting how Windows security handles those files.
Alongside that work, the developer is updating Unity engine dependencies to their latest versions to improve compatibility with Windows security features. The code-signed build is still forthcoming: the developer says it will be released “as soon as possible.”
