Kingdom Hearts 4’s extended trailer showcases King Mickey in a playable role, while transforming Quadratum into a battleground filled with Heartless. This new footage was revealed during Disney’s D23 event as part of a longer four-minute trailer.
As reported by GamingBolt on August 16, 2026, players will control Mickey during parts of the adventure. The trailer hints at a more fragmented journey for the series’ familiar trio, with Donald and Goofy venturing into danger without Sora at their side.
Mickey’s Keyblade Opens a Storybook-Sized Detour
Mickey’s sequence begins when he enters a mysterious tome, and the trailer gives that idea a distinctly physical twist. He uses his Keyblade on parts of the environment, causing sections to open up like a pop-up book rather than simply unlocking another door or chest.
The footage also includes a side-scrolling platforming stretch and an unusual transformation: players can control a giant papier-mâché Mickey to smash through obstacles. This format shift is typical of Kingdom Hearts, but giving Mickey direct control makes it feel like more than a brief cutscene.
Donald and Goofy Get Their Own Fight Through the Underworld
Donald and Goofy are not merely stopping by the Underworld to speak with Hades. The trailer shows them battling Heartless, sliding down slopes broken up by magma streams, and unleashing a team-up attack. Both characters are playable, suggesting Kingdom Hearts 4 will periodically shift focus away from Sora.
This split becomes more intriguing when Donald and Goofy reach Coco’s Land of the Dead without Sora, while Sora can see their spirits. The setup adds mystery: the worlds may be familiar Disney destinations, but the party’s paths are not moving in sync.
Quadratum’s Chaos Needs More Than Another Big Sora Battle
The trailer also returns attention to Quadratum, where Heartless and wider chaos press in around Sora. Other Keyblade wielders appear to be helping him, though their identities and roles remain unclear.
This is a promising aspect of the extended look. Kingdom Hearts can sometimes bury its strongest character moments beneath lore and universe-sized stakes, but playable Mickey, Donald, and Goofy create a practical reason to care about the party’s separation. Different protagonists can give each world its own rhythm—Mickey’s storybook traversal, the duo’s combat escape through the Underworld, and Sora’s fight through Quadratum—rather than relying on one hero to carry every moment.
Kingdom Hearts 4 is scheduled to launch in late 2027 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
