Hyper Games has announced that Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth will come to PlayStation 5 on September 18. The Norway-based indie studio also outlined the game’s wintry premise, watercolor-inspired presentation, and deformable snow system ahead of release.
Described as a cozy, melancholic puzzle adventure, Winter’s Warmth begins with Moomintroll waking from hibernation to find that winter is still gripping Moominvalley. With his family remaining asleep, he sets out to bring back spring and return his friend Snufkin to the valley.
The interesting detail here is how closely that premise connects the story and environmental design. Terrain is constructed from simple shapes covered by a deformable layer of snow, which responds to characters and other interactions. That makes the persistent winter more than seasonal decoration: it becomes a reactive part of the space through which Moomintroll travels and solves puzzles.
Hyper Games is also pursuing a storybook-like aquarelle style inspired by Moomin creator Tove Jansson’s visual work. The game combines three-dimensional forms with two-dimensional painted elements, an approach intended to retain the illustrative character of the source material while building navigable environments.
Winter’s Warmth is Hyper Games’ second Moomin game, following Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley. Moving the focus from Snufkin to Moomintroll gives the studio another perspective on the setting, this time built around an unnaturally prolonged winter and the effort to restore the valley’s familiar rhythm.
The project draws from a long creative history: Jansson’s first Moomin story was published in 1945. Hyper Games’ latest adaptation reaches PS5 on September 18, putting its snow interactions, mixed-media art direction, and more melancholy take on Moominvalley at the center of the studio’s next release.
