Disney’s Kingdom Hearts: The Series is officially “coming soon” to Disney+ and the Disney Channel, developed in partnership with series creator Tetsuya Nomura and the creative team at Square Enix. This marks Disney’s first original anime centered around the beloved crossover adventure.
The project was announced at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. Rather than retelling the long-running game saga, the series promises a brand-new story that expands the Kingdom Hearts universe while celebrating its established characters.
A New Route into Kingdom Hearts
The phrase “brand-new story” is significant. Kingdom Hearts features a complex lore that spans games, side stories, manga, and novels. An anime adaptation has the potential to provide a clearer narrative entry point without compressing every Keyblade mystery into one season.
In the D23 announcement, Disney Kids & Family president Ayo Davis emphasized the close collaboration with Nomura, describing the show as “unmistakably Kingdom Hearts.” This partnership is crucial; the series needs more than familiar Disney faces and a Keyblade-shaped silhouette. It requires the distinctive, emotional, and dramatic identity that has defined the games.
Expanding the Kingdom Hearts Franchise
The announcement comes as Square Enix continues work on Kingdom Hearts IV, giving the franchise two major paths forward: one interactive and one animated. Disney has also identified Kingdom Hearts as one of its nine billion-dollar franchises, underscoring the value of bringing this property to Disney+ and Disney Channel audiences.
The real test will be whether this series treats its new story as an invitation rather than a requirement. A show that delivers the series’ friendships, worlds in danger, and unique mythology without demanding prior knowledge could become a rare adaptation that welcomes newcomers while still offering longtime fans something meaningful.
