Surprise! Outlast has made a sudden appearance on the Nintendo Switch today, bringing the horror series to Nintendo’s hybrid console for the first time ever. Outlast: Bundle of Terror is available now on the European eShop, with an appearance on the North American store expected soon.
Outlast: Bundle of Terror is the title given to the Switch version of the first Outlast game with all downloadable content included. The DLC comes in the form of a prequel called Whistleblower, which launched about a year after Outlast did in 2013.
Publisher Red Barrels confirmed the Switch ports of both Outlast and Outlast 2 towards the end of last year. At the time of the announcement, the studio planned to release the first title in Q1 of 2018 with no solid release date, but it turns out we don’t even need the date since the release is here already!
In the same post, Red Barrels confirmed that no DLC is planned for Outlast 2, but they did promise a brand new Outlast game in the same universe, though it will not be a direct sequel to either entry in the series. “We strive to be risk-takers and this one is a pretty big challenge,” the studio said. “If all goes well, we’ll soon be able to reveal more.”
Outlast was well-received when it launched on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Mac in 2013. The survival horror game is set in a dilapidated asylum where the player assumes the role of investigative journalist Miles Upshur. You must navigate through the hospital, which is overrun by homicidal patients ready to give you a good jumpscare or two.
No word on when Outlast 2 will see a Nintendo Switch release, but it should happen before this summer. We wouldn’t be surprised if it launched as sneakily as the first entry did today.
