All in all, the changes are mostly superficial, with some neat gameplay additions and another belter of a setlist. It remains the stupendously fun, ridiculous celebration of football it always has been. Long may that continue.

Now that the Switch version has finally caught up in terms of features, the groundwork has been laid for the Switch’s successor to bring the performance up to speed too. For now, we can finally say what we’ve wanted to say for more than half a decade: this is the best football game ever released on a Nintendo system.

Maybe it’s the recent run of disappointing PC FIFAs talking, but despite the inevitable tech issues, FC 24 feels like progress. It feels like a developer who’s willing to take a few risks again—it’s shaken up the defending, knowing it’d furrow the community’s collective brow.

The ghost of FIFA Street lives on in Volta Mode. The Career Mode is here if you wish to mend a club’s fortunes and ferry it to glory. And if your poison is Ultimate Team, then you will find it present and correct, with some good tweaks. There are improvements, and there are problems – business as usual. The era of EA Sports’ FIFA may be over, but the game goes on.

EA Sports FC 24 doesn’t go out of its way to change too much, but it doesn’t need to – the additions to Ultimate Team, refined gameplay and nicer presentation packages make it a great football sim.
