Those that feared Nintendo’s console mis-steps would see them exiting the hardware business should be very happy to hear of their July success. Nintendo has enjoyed a summer of love, seeing their portable console outsell both the PS4 and Xbox One for all of July in the USA.

The numbers come from NPD, the most trusted source for North American gaming industry sales figures (an area kept relatively quiet compared to Japanese and even UK figures).

The gaming business is doing better in 2017 overall, Nintendo’s Switch is doing so well it’s also the “primary cause of the year-on-year gains” the console market has seen in 2017. Sales of all video games were up 19% from last year’s July.

Leading the charge is Splatoon 2, taking the trophy for best-selling July game for this year. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 are also in the Top 10 at 5th and 7th respectively.

Console sales are up 29% from July 2016, with PS4 taking the #2 spot behind the Switch.

Mathew Falvai

Mathew is a huge fan of Space, Strategy, and Shadowrun (Genesis version is #1). When it comes to games and films, he’d much rather experience a 10/10 classic from yesteryear than a 6/10 modern blandfest. He does feel we’re living in a gaming golden age with the power of indie developers at an all-time high, but wishes AAA publishers would take more risks. Mat believes it’s only a matter of time before the pendulum swings the other way and new ideas take their rightful place above reboots.
