Original article:
Popular team shooter Overwatch is getting a new seasonal event update for the Chinese New Year called Year of the Rooster, set to go live today January 24th.
The trailer for it was recently leaked on Weibo, and it reveals new features and the start/end dates. Posted here is a high-res version from a Spanish-speaking outpost. (I can’t embed that video here, and all YouTube versions have been removed due to copyright claims.)
The Year of the Rooster update launches today, though Blizzard has not said the exact time it will be available. You can participate in the seasonal event until Monday, February 13th.
The leaked trailer shows seasonally appropriate costumes for many of the heroes, such as Mei in her red and gold garb. Interestingly, Zenyatta, Winston, Roadhog, and Reinhardt all resemble characters from the classic Chinese story Journey to the West.
The four skins, according to reddit user hythl0day, are:
- Zenyatta’s Tang Sanzang skin. (Sun Wukong’s Buddhism master)
- Winston’s Sun Wukong skin. (The monkey king)
- Roadhog’s Zhu Bajie skin. (The pig monster, another apprentice of Tang Sanzang)
- Reinhardt’s Sha Heshang skin. (The river monster, yet another apprentice of Tang Sanzang)
Heroes playing a game of what appears to be Capture the Flag was also shown in the trailer. This event will be the first appearance of this game mode in Overwatch.
The Year of the Rooster update will be available for Xbox One, PS4, and PC January 24th until February 13th.
We’ll update this article when Blizzard releases patch notes and an official release time.
