Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s upcoming DLC, called The Champions’ Ballad, was revealed recently and sparked hope for a playable Zelda. Unfortunately, players will still only be able to control Link with the content’s release, according to Eiji Aonuma.

The reveal of The Champions’ Ballad DLC at E3 2017 showed pieces of Breath of the Wild “memories” focusing on the four Champions of Hyrule: Revali, Daruk, Mipha, and Urbosa. Leading the Champions at the end of the video is Princess Zelda. With such an emphasis on the Champions and Zelda, fans were hoping the characters would be playable in the DLC.

Breath of the Wild’s overall focus on Zelda’s historical actions, connected with the DLC reveal, certainly had players in high hopes. However, Eiji Aonuma confirmed that The Champions’ Ballad will be playable solely as Link. The producer broke the news at a Japan Expo 2017 panel.

As the Nintendo tweet (above) mentions, you’ll learn more about Zelda throughout the DLC, even if you can’t play as her. This one seems to be more story-based than the first DLC, The Master Trials, which takes about 4 to 5 hours of gameplay. Maybe we’ll get even more content with The Champions’ Ballad come Holiday.

Nintendo also recently confirmed the blue lobster shirt from The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker will also be included in the upcoming DLC. No other contents of The Champions’ Ballad is known as of now.

To download DLC’s for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you must purchase the game’s $20 Expansion Pass from the Nintendo eShop. This will allow you to access the small DLC available at launch, The Master Trials, and eventually The Champions’ Ballad when it becomes available.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available now, while The Champions’ Ballad DLC will release in Holiday 2017 for Wii U and Switch.

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
