All Video Game Releases Coming in September

September is here, and it’s bringing a great mix of game releases for every major platform. August was a huge month for video game releases, and September is gearing up to match it. There are several sports games coming this month, with racing titles like NASCAR Heat 2 and Project Cars 2 and team sports games like Pro Evolution Soccer 2018, NBA Live 18, and NHL 18.

While I’m not big into sports games, there are still some titles I’m really excited to try out. Read on for descriptions of top September releases, as well as the full list of launch dates. Also, be sure to check out what games you can grab for free on Xbox Live Gold and PS Plus this month.

September 6

Destiny 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to Bungie’s sci-fi online multiplayer first-person shooter. A lot of people have already tried out Destiny 2 during its multiple open betas, and we’re hearing good things. Developers have expanded gameplay with a deeper story, more patrol activities, and larger planets to explore. The Xbox One and PS4 versions launch together, but the PC version of the game won’t see a release until late October.

September 15

Dishonored: Death of the Outsider is the new stand-alone expansion to the Dishonored series and, like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, it’s a shorter, cheaper game than the mainline entries in the franchise. You play as female assassin Billie Lurk on a mission to kill the Outsider. The game’s story will conclude the “Kaldwin era” of the series.

Metroid: Samus Returns brings back our hero Samus for the first time in years. This 3DS title is a reboot of the 1991 Metroid II on GameBoy and is highly anticipated by fans of the series. Nintendo is also releasing a limited edition New 3DS XL with a sleek Metroid theme alongside the game the middle of the month.

September 22

Pokkén Tournament Deluxe, like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, is an upgraded port of the original Wii U title. Players can use one Joy-Con controller each — along with other controller options — to fight their Pokémon on a single Nintendo Switch console. There will also be new fighters and game modes to choose from.

September 29

Cuphead is an awesome-looking run-and-gun action indie game focused on boss battles. Inspired by cartoons of the 1930’s — think old-school Mickey Mouse — the visuals and audio are created with the same techniques of the era, i.e. traditional hand drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings.

Total War: Warhammer 2 is a turn-based strategy and real-time tactics video game, releasing only a year and a half after the original. It combines miniatures game Warhammer and turn-based strategy/ resource management Total War video games.

Those are the highlights. Here’s the full list of September releases:

Mischa McGill

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
