If you’re a big Metroid fan, you probably already know about — and pre-ordered — the upcoming Metroid II reboot. What you might not know is Nintendo plans to release a sleek Samus Edition of the New 3DS XL alongside Metroid: Samus Returns on September 15th.
The red-and-gold 3DS is themed after Samus’ similarly colored Varia Suit and featured a low key decal of the character on the outside of the top screen. Other than the new paint job, this New 3DS XL is built to the same standards as the base model. And like the base model, it’ll cost you $200.

The Samus Edition handheld will not come bundled with Metroid: Samus Returns, so you’ll have to buy it separately at your retailer. Or better yet, just download the digital version from the eShop once you get your hands on your shiny New 3DS XL.
This limited edition console differs slightly from the recently released New 2DS XL — both have the clamshell design, but the 2DS lacks the 3D visual option. Also, they both come with the small grey c-stick, which all “New” 3DS consoles feature. I haven’t used the c-stick in a game so far, but hey, it’s there.
Are any of you Samus fans going to be upgrading to this limited edition 3DS? You might want to hop on those pre-orders, as special Nintendo consoles tend to sell out quickly and reappear at jacked up price points even quicker.
Samus Returns isn’t the only Metroid title on the way right now — at E3 this year, Nintendo revealed that Metroid Prime 4 is in development for the Switch. Could we see a limited edition Joy-Con or Pro Controller with its release? We’ll let you know as soon as we do.
