A Twitch streamer has broken the world record speedrun for GameCube title Animal Crossing. Who even knew that was a thing?
You might be wondering how one speedruns Animal Crossing–or how one even completes a game like this, for that matter.
According to Speedrun.com, “completing” Animal Crossing requires collecting all items, including donating all fish, bugs, and fossils to the museum; acquiring all the golden tools; fully upgrading your house and Tom Nook’s store; gathering all player statues; building the town’s second bridge; and completing your catalog with all furniture, clothing, and gyroids.
While most people spend 100+ hours casually playing this life sim and collecting all the items, Twitch streamer Coldeggman completed the whole thing in 22 hours and 49 minutes. Impressive.
Now, the original Animal Crossing allows players to enter special codes to help collect some items. While this makes the speedrun a bit less interesting, players are not allowed to use the codes for the golden tools, fish, or bugs. You have to get those the way everyone else does, buddy pal.
Item codes are not a thing in the most recent Animal Crossing installment, New Leaf. This makes completing the catalog incredibly time consuming, and no one has tried a 100% speedrun for this title yet. However, Twitch streamer Orcastraw managed to pay off all his debts in a breezy 1 hour and 37 minutes.
The first ever speedrun by 0xA101 took almost 71 hours for 100% completion. This run, which took place 2 years ago, is now in 5th place.
Another type of speedrun for Animal Crossing is the “All Debts” run, which requires players to pay off all of one character’s debts to Tom Nook. This run is much more popular, as it takes most around 40 minutes to complete. The record-holder for this run did it in 36 minutes and 47 seconds.
