The review embargo for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild lifted recently, and people are throwing nothing but praise at the highly anticipated open world Zelda title.
Metacritic gave the game a 98%, which is almost unheard of. The only game ranked higher on Metacritic is actually The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for N64 at 99%.
Forbes reviewer called Breath of the Wild “unflinchingly ambitious and tirelessly innovative, and yet it feels like the natural culmination of decades of game design experience rolled into one big, awe-inspiring experience.”
IGN raved that it is “a masterclass in open-world design and a watershed game that reinvents a 30-year-old franchise.”
Most reviewers are thrilled with the endless encounters and experiences Breath of the Wild has to offer. IGN reviewer Jose Otero said he’s put over 50 hours into the game and still is constantly running into things he hasn’t seen before.
Some say seeing such glorious claims about the Switch’s main launch title fills them with hope for the upcoming console. However, despite these raving reviews, many gamers still feel the Switch isn’t worth buying.
In a NeoGAF thread, most gamers who are interested in Breath of the Wild and have a Wii U said they plan to pick the game up for that console.
User Petrae said, “If anything, the reviews reinforce my decision to stay away from Switch until Zelda isn’t the only big thing on it. Maybe for the holidays, or tax time next year.”
A couple users are saying they’re still skeptical because of previous highly acclaimed Zelda titles that turned out to be sub par, while many others are waiting to buy a Switch when the library is more filled out with titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2.
Others still just don’t like buying consoles at launch and are waiting to see what friends have to say about the Switch.
Of course, one game doesn’t make a console, and I understand skepticism. But I can’t help but have overwhelming excitement for the Switch, especially after the crazy awesome Zelda reviews.
