The Summer Games Done Quick 2021 marathon is now halfway over, with day four providing plenty of interesting speedruns to enjoy. There was a wide variety of games and genres, including a grab-bag morning packed with underrated gems. From lengthy RPG runs to lightning-fast first-person shooters, SGDQ 2021 day four had a good smattering of options for everyone. We spent a good chunk of the day soaking up all the summer speedrunning, so we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite runs from SGDQ 2021 day four.

While we wish it was possible, we weren’t able to watch every speedrun of the day, so use these recommendations as a starting point. We had a great time with Little Nightmares 2 when it came out earlier this year, so this Any% speedrun by Kenhie was one of our most anticipated runs of the entire marathon. Luckily, the run lived up to our expectations, featuring tons of inventive skips and glitches that we never thought possible. While there were a handful of glitches, a lot of the time-saves in this run involve smart uses of the environment geometry and quick enemy dodges. This playstyle preserves the intense nature of Little Nightmares 2, making it both an impressive and notably creepy watch. Whether you’ve played the game or not, this run of Little Nightmares 2 is worth checking out if you like the horror genre.

Kororinpa: Marble Mania is a straightforward game where you roll a marble around a maze, occasionally collecting stars as you work toward the goal. It’s a Wii game that uses gyroscopic motion controls, which are surprisingly accurate. If you’ve ever seen a speedrun of Super Monkey Ball, you should have a decent idea of what the Marble Mania run looks like. In a flurry of speedy Wii-mote flicks and precise setups, runner callumbal flung the marble from start to finish, completing every level at an absurd pace. The on-screen action gets so chaotic at times, it’s apparent that muscle memory and many hours of practice are required for a successful run. Marbles flying at super sonic speeds are oddly satisfying, and the Marble Mania run wound up being one of our favorites from SGDQ 2021 day four.

Although speedrunner JoeyBaby69 is more well-known for their runs of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, they surprised us with a fantastic showing of the underrated N64 platformer Mischief Makers at SGDQ 2021 day four. Featuring a colorful robot maid named Marina, the game involves lots of grabbing, pulling, boosting, and a bit of the ‘ol “shake-shake”! After watching this sub-hour run, it’s easy to see why JoeyBaby was drawn to it, as the self-contained levels and ultra-fast movement make it similar to Sonic. Along with some excellent commentary, JoeyBaby69 showed off this N64 hidden gem with speed and skill, easily making it onto our list of the best speedruns of SGDQ 2021 day four.

Every GDQ marathon has at least one lengthy JRPG speedrun, and SGDQ 2021 was no different. This year, we were treated to Plexa’s run of Golden Sun: The Lost Age, the Game Boy Advance sequel developed by Camelot. Set in the fantasy world of Weyward, the game focuses on a group of has-been anti-heroes attempting to light up the two remaining Elemental Lighthouses, releasing a great magic into the world. With some optimal battle strategies, a few tricks, and crazy quick menu movement, Plexa blasted through this pixelated adventure with finesse. If you enjoy RNG manipulation, beautiful music, and colorful RPGs, get comfy and check out this speedrun!

The newer Hitman games offer wild playgrounds to pull off wicked assassinations, usually requiring the player to sneak their way through the dense levels while evading capture and notice. In this run, Yannini played through every major level in all three Hitman games, pulling off a Silent Assassin/Suit Only performance on the hardest difficulty. This restricts the use of any disguises, heightens the awareness of guards, and is generally one of the most challenging stealth experiences in modern stealth gaming. However, Yannini used a handful of impressive tricks and calculated shots to manipulate the enemy AI, breezing through the levels in the blink of an eye. Hitman 3 can be a bit finicky and random, so the run wasn’t perfect, but we still had an awesome time watching Yannini assassinate in style.

It might sound redundant, but Ghostrunner speedrun is really, really fast. In this first-person platformer/shooter, players wall-run, slide, and grapple their way through a sharp cyberpunk world. Like other speedruns of movement-based shooters, this means extremely precise movement at incredible rates of speed. With an abundance of movement tricks and routing optimizations, Ghostrunner is both impressive and super exciting to watch. In terms of pure movement speed, this run is one of the fastest we’ve seen at the entire SGDQ 2021 marathon so far. If you like brisk first-person games like Mirror’s Edge or Titanfall 2, prepare to be wowed by this amazing run.

As we pass the halfway point of the marathon, SGDQ 2021 has raised over $700,000 for Doctors Without Borders. At this point, we’ll be surprised if the donation total doesn’t surpass $2 million when all is said and done. It’s not uncommon to see the GDQ marathons hit multi-million donation totals, especially with such a stacked weekend planned.
