Spyro the Dragon Remasters Reportedly Coming to PS4 This Year

Activision is reportedly bringing remastered versions of a few of the early Spyro the Dragon games to PS4 later this year. This news comes from Kotaku, who said unnamed sources familiar with the project confirmed the remasters, release details, and gameplay features.

Kotaku called the project the Spyro the Dragon Trilogy Remaster, which will include revamped versions of Spyro the DragonSpyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon. The trilogy will be available exclusively on PS4 — with PS4 Pro support — with a one-year console exclusivity deal. Ports of the remaster should come to other platforms in 2019.

The Spyro remaster is being developed by Vicarious Visions, the same studio behind last year’s successful Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. Like N. Sane Trilogy, the new Spyro game will come with improved visuals, a remastered soundtrack, an updated save feature, and more.

Sources also indicated we will see some content that was cut from the original games. While no more details were shared on the new content, it brings to mind the level Stormy Ascent, which was only accessible with a GameShark on the original Crash Bandicoot. Vicarious Visions remastered the level and included it as an official stage in N. Sane Trilogy, so we could see something similar with Spyro.

So when will this be officially confirmed? Activision has not commented on the Spyro remaster yet, but Kotaku’s sources claimed the game will be announced next month, March 2018, and release in Quarter 3 of this year. One source suggested that the game would launch in September, which would line up with Spyro the Dragon‘s 20th anniversary.

We’ll keep you updated on news of the Spyro the Dragon remaster. Are you excited for this trilogy, or would you rather Activision focus elsewhere? Let us know in the comments.

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
