Sonic Mania brings old-school Sonic to a new generation next spring.
Sega is throwing a massive 25th birthday party for Sonic the Hedgehog right now at Comic-Con. So far the show has been decent, even though it sounds like one of the sound techs left an input cord ajar. Seriously, it sounds like a convention for bees in the Twitch stream. The highlight of the night so far has been the announcement of a brand-new Sonic game that OG Sonic fans are going to adore.
Sonic Mania is an old-school 2D platformer, and it looks gorgeous. Sega wanted to honor Sonic’s legacy and celebrate what made the series to popular in the first place. This is a fantastic direction for Sega right now, in my opinion. Sonic Boom has pretty much ruined Sonic in modernity, and series fans have been aching for a true return to form. Sonic Mania is Sega’s answer to its fans. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles will all be playable. New zones and classic zones will be featured, and it looks like some new moves have been introduced as well.
You can see from the trailer that while Sonic and his surroundings have been given a major face-lift, the dev team was obviously trying to recreate the 16-bit aesthetic from the original as authentically as possible. Some people will really like this, and some people are going to bitch and moan about it. I think it looks classy and fun, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it when it launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC next spring. Check out the new trailer (uploaded only minutes ago!) right here:
