SGDQ 2022 day seven was stuffed to the brim with great speedruns, backed by generous donations, and an overwhelming wholesome vibe. The entire marathon has been wonderful, and SGDQ 2022 day seven was a demonstration of some of the best speedrun content of the entire week.
While the inevitable pull of sleep prevented us from catching most of the early morning runs, we spent lots of time watching the final day of SGDQ 2022. We’ve got a list of some of our favorite speedruns of the day, but as is the case with every day of SGDQ 2022, we highly recommend you check out all of the other runs as well. That said, these are some of the speedruns that had our hype levels maxed during SGDQ 2022 day seven.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (PC, European Extreme) by dlimes13
The Metal Gear speedruns at SGDQ 2022 have been fantastic, and this run of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty by dlimes13 was another winner. Playing on European Extreme difficulty, which basically grants enemies super vision and realistic damage output, dlimes13 took on a speedy yet stealthful approach, sliding past patrolling guards in several clench-worthy moments. To make things even more impressive, dlimes13 shot for Big Boss rank, which is awarded for completing the game without saving, killing an enemy, or using healing items. If that wasn’t hard enough, dlimes13 also played on “Game Over if Discovered” mode, which instantly ends the game if the player is spotted by any enemy or camera. Pushed to the highest levels of difficulty, dlimes13 handled MGS2 with an unbelievable amount of skill, earning a solid time in the process.

Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World (All Five Games w/ ACE) by SethBling and IsoFrieze
If you watched the Ocarina of Time beta showcase from SGDQ 2022 day six, you should be well aware of the kind of gaming magic that’s possible with ACE (arbitrary code execution). In short, ACE is a glitch that allows the player to overwrite the game’s code through a series of button inputs, which when used for speedrunning purposes, can result in some truly fast times. By linking together several glitches, including ACE, SethBling and his crew showed off just how fast you can clear every game on the Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World cartridge for Super Nintendo. This is more of an exhibition of interesting tech than traditional speedrun, but it’s definitely worth checking out, especially if you’re a longtime fan of classic Super Mario games.

Kaizo Super Metroid (Any%) by Oatsngoats
Super Metroid is one of the games you can usually expect to grace the SGDQ stage, and in the history of the marathon, Oatsngoats has provided consistently impressive speedruns of this SNES classic. However, for SGDQ 2022, Oatsngoats wanted to increase the difficulty, opting to speedrun Kaizo Super Metroid, an ultra-challenging mod that features incredibly tough room designs, exceptionally deadly enemies, and requires multiple tricks to complete. With minimal room for error, Oatsngoats completed this sadistic Super Metroid mod in a couple of hours, proving their skill in spades. If you thought that the original Super Metroid was tough, just wait until you see the complexity of this stunning mod.

Super Mario Maker 2 (Relay Race) by PangaeaPanga, juzcook, CarlSaga42, Aurateur, Shoujo, and Tankuidan
If yesterday’s Super Mario World run was any indication, it’s clear that speedrun relay races are often of the most lively events at any GDQ marathon. Several runners from the SMW race returned, along with some new faces, to face off in a nine-level gauntlet of Super Mario Maker 2 levels. Team “It’s a Face” and Team “It’s a Hat” went head-to-head in custom levels created specifically for this relay race, testing their skills in almost every Mario platforming discipline. Thanks to Super Mario Maker 2‘s robust creation tools, the runners dealt with some insanely tough and inventive stages, with great back-and-forth competition. This relay race was undoubtedly one of the most hyped speedruns of SGDQ 2022 day seven, so we definitely recommend taking the time to check it out.

Super Mario 64 (120 Star) by Simply
Super Mario 64 is the game that laid the foundation for 3D platformers to build on, and decades after its initial release, is still revered as one of the best games ever made. We’ve seen Super Mario 64 speedruns at many GDQ marathons in the past, but it still manages to fill us with nostalgia every single time. Running the 120 Star category, speedrunner Simply put in work, showing off with risky strategies and tons of glitches. Simply sped through Super Mario 64 at an unbelievable pace, picking up multiple stars per minute, eventually resulting in the fastest 120 Star speedrun ever performed at GDQ. With this nearly flawless run, Simply showed us why Super Mario 64 is one of the best speed games of all time.

Elden Ring (All Remembrances) by catalystz
Elden Ring is easily a front runner for 2022’s game of the year, and although it’s only been available for a few months, speedrunners have already broken the game wide open. Runner catalystz showed us a mixture of fantastic glitches and risky boss strategies with their All Remembrances speedrun, which requires defeating all 15 of the game’s major bosses before reaching the credits. With the help of the Pegasus glitch and wrong warping, which enables the runner to ride his horse through the air and skip major sections of the game, catalystz trekked through the Lands Between and defeated every big bad boss in stunning fashion. Using both the Royal Knight’s Resolve weapon ability and some overpowered magical spells, catalystz defeated such notorious bosses as Malenia without taking a single hit. This was an appropriately hyped up run to close out SGDQ 2022 day seven, leaving us with a smile on our faces.

As the curtains closed on SGDQ 2022, the total donations for Doctors Without Borders exceeded $3 million. This marks yet another year where Games Done Quick has smashed through expectations, raising an absurdly selfless amount of money for charity. With any luck, they’ll be able to break through this milestone when Games Done Quick returns next year!
