AGDQ 2022

Retro and Next-Gen Share the AGDQ 2022 Spotlight (Day 3 Recap)

The seven-day-long speedrun marathon Awesome Games Done Quick 2022 is now in full swing, closing out its third day of raising money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Day three started with some stealth and shooting games, followed by a block of retro titles and a lengthy Final Fantasy speedrun. PlayStation games were the big focus of the afternoon and evening, with a handful of PS5 exclusives on display. The beginning of the horror block capped off the night, leading into yet another day of festivities. As with the first two days of the marathon, we had a wonderful time watching day three of AGDQ 2022, so we’ve whipped up a list of our favorite speedruns of the day!

If you’re interested in watching these speedruns, you can find the replays on Games Done Quick’s Twitch channel or their YouTube channel. There’s a slight delay between the live airing and on-demand upload time, so you might have to wait a day or so for the videos to arrive. That said, if you’re reading this and the marathon is still live, stop by the stream and check things out! There’s always more time to catch up after the marathon has ended. Also, please keep in mind that this is a small selection of the games that were scheduled during AGDQ 2022 day three. There were tons of runs we weren’t able to catch, so there’s a good chance we missed some gems! With that said, these are our picks for the best speedruns of AGDQ 2022 day three!

The Best Speedruns of AGDQ 2022 Day 3

Marathon: Durandal (Kindergarten) by TBCR

The early morning hours of AGDQ 2022 day three were graced by this chill yet endearing speedrun of the old school FPS, Marathon: Durandal by runner TBCR. Developed by Bungie long before they created the Halo franchise, Marathon: Durandal is a faux 3D shooter similar to DOOM or Castle Wolfenstein, featuring futuristic weaponry and alien enemies. In his signature pessimistic and personable style of commentary, TBCR performed a brief run on the game’s “Kindergarten” difficulty, allowing him to pull off rocket-boosted movement and more. When the hours get late at AGDQ 2022, we love to sit back and relax with some comfy retro runs, and TBCR’s Marathon: Durandal speedrun was perfect for that.

Willow (Any%) by Sathdresh

There was a pleasant Nintendo Entertainment System block during the morning hours of AGDQ 2022, offering a slew of comfy retro speedruns to enjoy. We had a good time sitting back and soaking up this “Any%” run of Willow, the top-down adventure game based on the 1988 fantasy film of the same name. Runner Sathdresh had an admirable showing, utilizing a handful of clips and tricks to achieve victory in just over an hour. Although the run went slightly over estimate, Sathdresh redeemed things with a fun extra run of the “Debug%” category, which uses the in-game password system to access a developer debug menu. If you’ve grown tired of watching speedruns of the same big popular franchises, this comfy run of Willow should provide some 8-bit entertainment.

Ratchet & Clank (2002) (New Game +) by deltadoid

The Ratchet & Clank franchise has had a recent boost of popularity thanks to the new PlayStation 5 exclusive sequel, which was also run at AGDQ 2022. While we skipped the Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart speedrun to avoid spoilers, we were super excited for this “New Game +” speedrun of the PlayStation 2 original by runner deltadoid. Using a variety of cool movement tech, including infinite side-jumps and long-jump chains, deltadoid skipped large sections of the levels, occasionally hopping right to the end trigger. The humorous commentary and great chemistry between the runner and couch helped give this run a relaxed feel, continuing the trend of great speedruns at AGDQ 2022 day three.

Final time: 22:10

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade (Intermission, Normal, Any%) by GenericallyNamed and DutchPotato

We had a pretty good time playing through Final Fantasy VII Remake when it came out in 2020 and are patiently awaiting Part Two of the fan-favorite remake. Luckily, this speedrun race of the spin-off, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, was enough to tide us over. Both runners, GenericallyNamed and DutchPotato, put on an excellent race, pulling off some optimal combat while navigating menus with impeccable speed. Like other JRPG speedruns, this race has a lot of complex strategies during combat, which was expertly explained by the couch commentators. While most Final Fantasy speedruns are multiple hours in length, this brisk race gives you plenty of crazy JRPG action in just under one hour.

Final time: 48:35

Returnal (Fresh File, Any%) by cavecavecave

Returnal is one of the best PlayStation 5 games by far, and this “Any%” speedrun by cavecavecave demonstrated why so many people are digging the game. With its bright colors, flashy combat, and quick-paced movement, Returnal is an excellent candidate for a speed game. Running on a brand new file with no prior upgrades, cavecavecave braved a slew of bullet-spewing bosses as they conquered this next-gen rogue-lite in the blink of an eye. In addition the the “Fresh File” run, we also got to see a bonus run of the “New Game +” category, thanks to a donation incentive. Whether you’ve had the pleasure of playing Returnal or not, we definitely recommend that you check out this speedrun!

Final time: 46:04

Dead Rising (Timeskip New Game) by Ecdycis

Dead Rising is one of our favorite games of all time, pushing the limits of the action genre with creative gameplay and a fun sandbox environment primed with weapons for slaying zombies. While the normal Dead Rising game contains long sections of timed free-roaming between main missions, this speedrun utilizes the “timeskip” mod for the PC version, which allows the runner to play all story missions without needing to wait. This makes for a much more straightforward run of the open-ended zombie game, but one that still retains Dead Rising‘s quirky personality. Instead of exterminating thousands of zombies, runner Ecdycis sped through the shopping mall on a skateboard, picking up just enough weapons to quickly eliminate the challenging bosses along the way. While a lot of the run was about combat optimization, there are a few wild glitches as well, including a glitchy skip involving a flying bike. Overall, this was a great run of Dead Rising‘s story content and one of the best speedruns of AGDQ 2022 day three!

Final time: 36:01

By the end of day three, AGDQ 2022 has raised over $690,000 for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. The marathon hit its $500,000 goal in record time, boding well for the rest of the week. We love to see the donations pour in and we hope that the generosity of the community persists in the coming days.

As always, we’ll be covering the entire AGDQ 2022 marathon with daily articles as well as live reactions on our Twitter page. Feel free to stop by and say hello as we watch the marathon and chime in with moment-by-moment reactions and clips. That’s all for now, so enjoy the marathon and consider donating to AGDQ 2022!
