Approaching the halfway mark in the seven-day long speedrun marathon, Summer Games Done Quick 2019 (or SGDQ 2019 for short) has an amazing showing on day four. Packed with laughs, surprising moments, and unbelievably fast gameplay, SGDQ 2019 day four was truly a sight to behold. We’re here to list off our favorite speedruns from SGDQ, and let you know what the best speedruns from SGDQ 2019 day four were. With classic games like Silent Hill 3, Glover, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, and many more, SGDQ 2019 day four was packed with quality content. The Resident Evil 2 remake was one of our favorite games of this year, and this speedrun lived up to the hype. Bawkabasoup performed an admirable run of the Claire A route, which is notorious for its brutal difficulty and tough luck-based zombie attacks. This run was elevated by a very hyped up audience, genuine reactions to frightening scenes, and countless quality jokes. I easily consider this one of the best speedruns of SGDQ 2019 day three.

Starting with Punchy’s run of Silent Hill 3, the 2019 Silly Games Done Quick block took over Wednesday morning. Almost every single run from the morning is worth watching, but that’s a big ask for even a seasoned speedrun fan. We highly recommend you check out all the Silly Games Done Quick runs, but here were some of our absolute favorites.
The Silly Games Done Quick block is often where you’ll find the loudest crowd (besides the upcoming weekend) cheering on the silliest games, and often times that’s all you really need. As a standalone speedrun, the Big the Cat portion of Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut is void of any incredibly tough glitches, and from a viewer’s perspective, doesn’t seem all that tough to pull off. To make things more difficult, runners JerKro and Allegro teamed up for some fishing gameplay by using the same controller (hence the “two players, one controller” category). This, combined with a ridiculous level of hype and excitement from the audience, makes this a standout speedrun at SGDQ 2019. It’s essentially 7 minutes of people getting super excited over Big the Cat catching some frogs, and that’s a really good example of what makes the Silly Games Done Quick block so fun.

In the fighting game Divekick, there are only two buttons and fighters get knocked out in one hit. Since there are only two buttons, the two competitors in this exceptionally weird race used Donkey Kong Jungle Beat bongo controllers. As a speedrun race, this is one of the most intense of SGDQ 2019, especially due to the high-level player by the runners. The final moments are incredibly close, leaving me on the edge of my seat. The silly factor is simply a bonus.

Sure, Shrek is a funny meme and a beloved character on the internet. Along with cries of “Somebody once told me…” as Smash Mouth’s “All-Star” plays on loop, few things can get the internet as riled up as a good ol’ fashioned Shrek appearance. Apart from the meme-factor, the Shrek Extra Large speedrun was surprisingly fun and appropriately silly, making a great entry into the Silly block. Although you should expect plenty of laughs from this speedrun, you might not expect the quality of the game itself, which was a pleasant surprise for me. Don’t get me wrong; Shrek Extra Large on the Gamecube isn’t the best game ever made, but it’s definitely coherent and better than most licensed games. Whether you’re on-board with the ironic Shrek craze or not, this is a quality speedrun with plenty of entertaining moments.

Like the Sonic Adventure run earlier in the block, this Glover run was tons of fun due to an excited crowd and the lighthearted banter of the runner and couch. If you’ve never played the Nintendo 64 platformer Glover, the game is pretty weird in its own right, as players take on the role of a giant glove. Runner YoshiPro put on a great performance, managing to pull of some impressive tricks and persist through the run despite a game crash part-way through. With chants of “love to glove!” and “YoshiPro!” in the background for most of the run, this Glover run is full of joy and oddity.

The rest of the Silly Games Done Quick block is definitely worth checking out, these selections were just the ones we managed to catch and thought were stand-outs. The rest of the choices below were not included in the Silly Games Done Quick block.
Clustertruck is one of my favorite indie games of 2016, and a game that I feel is a bit underrated. The concept is simple; you must jump from the rooftop of racing trucks and avoid the ground until you reach the end goalpost. The game gives you a variety of abilities to make this easier, including double-jumps and more. ConnorAce showed off his mastery of Clustertruck by running the “NoAbility%” category, which removes all of the abilities entirely. Instead, ConnorAce must rely on the “late-jump”, a vital piece of movement tech that allows him to careen across stages at a high speed. This speedrun is one of incredible skill, and a great example of how speedrunners make the impossible seem relatively easy.

Runner fishmcmuffins brought a hefty dose of bullet hell into day four of SGDQ 2019 when he performed a speedrun of Nuclear Throne, an exceptionally colorful rogue-like game. In the game, you play as an assortment of freaks taking on an inter-dimensional police force that wants you dead. Runner fishmcmuffins blazed through the game’s looping progression, destroying all the unique bosses. This is a speedrun that looks just as hard as it is, with bullets filling the screen and several near-death calls. If you want to be wowed and you love pixel-art and rogue-likes, this is the run for you.

Runner Distortion2 stepped up to the plate to deliver the final speedrun of day four, performing an “All Bosses” run (including DLC) of Dark Souls II. Often regarded as one of the hardest game series of all time, the Dark Souls franchise takes no prisoners. Despite a technical issue that caused severe frame rate drops, forcing Distortion2 to restart the game throughout the run, the Dark Souls II speedrun was mighty impressive. Distortion2 guided us through the game’s 40+ bosses, covering both the main game and all downloadable content. If you’ve ever played a Dark Souls game, the difficulty of this accomplishment doesn’t need to be stated.
