AGDQ 2020 continued into its third day, delivering even more awesome speedruns and donations to charity. In addition to lengthy speedruns of popular franchises like Grand Theft Auto and The Legend of Zelda, day three of AGDQ 2020 was home to indie gems and underrated retro titles as well. We weren’t able to catch as many speedruns as we would’ve liked to, but most of what we saw was absolutely fantastic. To give you a glimpse of what AGDQ 2020 day three had to offer, we’ve compiled a list of our picks for the best speedruns of AGDQ 2020 day three. Whether you’re into PC games or console classics, there was a run for everyone at AGDQ 2020 day three!

One of my favorite parts of any Games Done Quick marathon is discovering a quirky and fun indie game that I had never heard of before. The first run of this type that I came across at AGDQ 2020 was the Eagle Island run that MrDino023 performed during the morning of day three. This cute, pixel-art adventure game sees our hero running through nine different dungeons, defeating bosses and acquiring power-ups. Despite its cutesy visual style, the game is deceptively challenging. This run was mostly about gameplay skill over crazy glitches, resulting in a fun hour-long run full of impressive combat sequences and colorful visuals. It was happy to learn about Eagle Island and watch this adorable run, starting off day three of AGDQ 2020 with a fun vibe.

Simply put, Hotline Miami is one of my favorite indie PC games. Even though I’ve never gotten very far in the game myself, I’ve always loved the aesthetic, gameplay, and oddball tone of this frenetic shooter. Runner Snowfats performed a great All Masks run, which requires him to achieve a high score on each level. This usually results in a magnificent blur of pixelated violence with tons of crazy kill-combos. Hotline Miami speedruns are somewhat improvisational by nature, adding a layer of anxiety to this already hectic run. This game usually lands on my best speedruns of AGDQ list, and it was nice to have another great run at AGDQ 2020.

Chippy is another one of those games that I had not heard about until I saw this speedrun at AGDQ 2020 day three, and I’m very glad I tuned in. Chippy is an indie PC title that’s a challenging boss rush of bullet hell baddies, complete with vibrant neon colors. Runner Scrublord showed off his precision shooting off well, besting each boss with relative ease. Most of the run is pure shooting skill, although there were a few amusing glitches as well. The relatively short length of this speedrun also makes it a great quick AGDQ fix during the busy week.

TheMexicanRunner is no stranger to Games Done Quick marathons, having performed speedruns of games like Battletoads, Cuphead, and several others in the past. Since AGDQ 2020 is taking place in Florida, TheMexicanRunner treated us to a tropical journey through Adventure Island II, a massively underrated NES platformer. As with almost all of TMR’s runs, it was a great display of retro gaming skill combined with charming and lighthearted commentary. If you’ve never heard of Adventure Island II, I can’t recommend this run enough.

Both sinister1 and zallard1 are absolute masters at the Punch-Out!! franchise and this speedrun is yet another example of their impeccable skill. If you’ve ever played the original Punch-Out!! on NES, you’ll know just how challenging the game is on its own. In an effort to make things even more challenging, this run sees both sinister1 and zallard1 using the same controller, with one player controlling the directional pad and the other the two punch buttons. Oh, and they’re both blindfolded. This is a level of Punch-Out!! gameplay that is unbelievably impressive, and only possible with thousands of hours of practice.

AGDQ 2020 marked the first Games Done Quick to have a Zelda relay race, and considering how popular the franchise is, it’s surprising that it took this long to appear at a marathon. In this lengthy run, each team ran through the first two Zelda games on NES, as well as The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on SNES. Across all three games, the race was incredibly close. With plenty of screen-syncs and lead changes, this was a properly hype run throughout. The entire relay race was had excellent commentary as well, with great explanations of glitches and the various strategies of each team. This is a must-watch AGDQ 2020 run for any Zelda fan.

By the end of day three, AGDQ 2020 raised over $500,000 for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. As always, Games Done Quick has to be commended for their excellence in fundraising, and the speedrunning community should be very proud of the event so far. With the most popular days of the marathon yet to pass, I’m sure we’ll see that donation total rocket in no time.
