The Best Speedruns of SGDQ 2023 Day 5
Paper Mario (Any% no ace + Glitch Exhibition) by Mx_4
Pulling into the early morning hours of SGDQ 2023 day 5, we were treated to one of the comfiest runs of the marathon so far, Paper Mario! This N64 RPG was a childhood staple for us, so watching Mx_4 speed through the entire game in under two hours was both nostalgic and impressive. Playing the “Any%, no ACE” category, Mx_4 pulled off some tough, frame-perfect glitches while keeping their cool. With wholesome, informative commentary and a fun glitch exhibition at the end, this Paper Mario was a supremely chill viewing.

The Silly Games Block by many runners
The “silly games done quick” block is a longstanding staple of SGDQ, where the stream is treated to exclusively silly, irreverent games. The silly games block at SGDQ 2023 was exceptional from start to end, featuring everything from mid-2000s action games to point ‘n click adventures about climbing staircases. Toilet paper speedrunning, Dr. Seuss adaptations, and the infamous Pepsiman are just the tip of the iceberg on this eclectic block.
The silly block was spectacular, so we want to thank all of the speedrunners who put on the show. Thanks to: pmcTRILOGY, Nichole Goodnight, Bathinjan, yoshipro, Faust4712, Asuka424, TheFlyingMarlin, davidtki, Mildew, and Ritzblues! We appreciated your humor throughout the wee hours of the morning.

The Curse of Monkey Island (Any% Mega-Monkey) by frozenspade
If our highlighting of LOOM and Maniac Mansion wasn’t enough to convince you that we love point ‘n click adventures, look no further than The Curse of Monkey Island for our next favorite run of SGDQ 2023 day 5. Fresh from playing Return to Monkey Island, we were more than ready for this Any% Mega-Monkey run from frozenspade, and boy did it deliver. Plenty of pirate antics were had, including singing sea shanties, finding treasure, and more. Frozenspade perfectly explained both the lore and every puzzle throughout the run, making it easy to follow even if you’re not familiar with Monkey Island.

Mega Man 6 (Any%, 2 Players 1 Controller) by DarkTerrex and Ppotdot1
Beating Mega Man games is no easy task, but being experts in the ways of the blue bomber, runners DarkTerrex and Ppotdot1 needed a greater challenge. Playing the any% route in co-op, the runners shared a single NES controller, with Ppotdot1 controlling the D-pad and DarkTerrex on the face buttons. Working in tandem and showcasing cooperative skills of the highest caliber, they blasted through Dr. Wily’s best robot masters with ease. Definitely check out this speedrun from SGDQ 2023 day 5 if you’re itching for some impressive retro gaming action.
Final time: 37:53
Titanfall 2 (Any%) by Blaidan
Titanfall 2 has some of the best movement mechanics in any first-person shooter, ever, which makes it for a wildly fun-to-watch speedrun. Since the game was last seen at a GDQ event in 2019, tons of things have changed about the speedrun route, including many core strategies. Using wall-running, precise shooting, grenade jumps, and all manner of highly technical tricks, runner Blaidan bounced around levels with immense speed like a human pinball machine. Supported by fantastic commentary from fellow Titanfall 2 runner, Bryonato, Blaidan blew our minds and performed one of the best runs of the entire SGDQ 2023 marathon.
