Red Dead Redemption V, a mod that was set to recreate the wild west game’s map inside Grand Theft Auto V, has been cancelled after three years in development.
This high-profile mod was coming from the group known as .White, whose aim was to bring Red Dead Redemption’s map and some custom content to PC. Players have begged for a RDD PC port for years, and while Rockstar hasn’t come through, this mod was going to be the next best thing.
Shortly after Red Dead Redemption V’s teaser trailer was released Friday, .White was contacted by publisher Take-Two, who more-or-less ordered the shut down.
.White’s lead modder Mr. Leisurewear announced Red Dead Redemption V’s cancellation.
“I know this is hard pill to swallow, but as you may have noticed we did get contacted,” Mr. Leisurewear wrote on the GTAForums. “And we sadly have to say we are stopping this project. So thanks guys, we were all so happy to see this, but it isn’t going to happen, sorry.”
Mr. Leisurewear didn’t think the mod went as far into illegal territory as Take-Two did, however.
“It was just gonna be the map,” he explained. “Undertaking this sort of a project with additional content ported over was never feasible… we were only gonna get a way to convert the map with both legal copies of each game, and some custom scripted additional content… there was never any intention or mention to either port a story mode over from RDR to [GTAV].”
When pressed for more information, Mr. Leisurewear clarified a lawsuit had not been filed against .White, but he would face legal consequences if he released any of the mod’s files or the .White toolkit.
A beta was set to launch for the Red Dead Redemption V mod this summer, but sadly it will never see the light of day.
