Frontier announces Planet Coaster and Elite Dangerous will get physical releases

Frontier Developments has just confirmed that their two latest releases will be getting physical editions. The developer has teamed up with Sold Out to produce some hard copies of their games. Sold Out boss Garry Williams had an interview with GamesIndustry.biz where he explained the reasoning for this decision.

He states that “any quality game works as a boxed release” and that “quality games will sell whatever the distribution method”. To clarify this a little bit more, he added that Rocket League has reached 1 million boxed copy sales. This is despite the fact that digital versions of the game have also sold over a million copies.

The PC boxed edition of Planet Coaster will be landing on May 23rd. However, Williams hinted that this version of the game could come with some extra goodies. There has been no confirmation of this however so it’s uncertain if there will be any extra content in the box.

Elite Dangerous will be getting a physical edition later this year. Elite Dangerous: Legendary Edition will contain the base game, the Horizons expansion and 1000 Frontier points which can be used to purchase in-game items. This version of the game will be getting a PS4 and Xbox One release. There is no word on a PC release for the Elite Dangerous physical edition.

A release date for Elite Dangerous: Legendary Edition is currently not available. Despite this, the developer confirms that it will be arriving later this year for PS4 and Xbox One. All of the content for this physical box will be digital goodies in addition to the physical disc.

We will provide you with more updates as Frontier releases more details about the physical editions of their games. Hopefully the developer will clarify what the Planet Coaster physical edition will be shipping with later this year in May.
