Pokémon GO has opened free 10th-anniversary Timed Research worldwide. It gives every eligible player a perfect-stat Mewtwo with a Special Background and Mega Mewtwo Y progress.
The official Pokémon GO announcement confirms the worldwide distribution, the perfect appraisal stats, the Special Background, and Mega Level 3 for Mega Mewtwo Y. It also makes the expiry rule explicit: starting the research is not enough. Every task and reward must be completed and claimed before the cutoff.
The Research Only Has Two Tasks
The official post does not publish the individual steps. However, Leek Duck’s live event tracker lists the complete one-page research:
- Catch 10 Pokémon to receive one Master Ball.
- Power up Pokémon 10 times to receive 500 Mega Mewtwo Y Energy.
Completing both tasks unlocks the Mewtwo encounter. These are light requirements, but the hard deadline still matters because unclaimed Timed Research rewards expire.
What Mega Level 3 Means—and Why It Matters
The reward arrives with the third Mega Level already unlocked for Mega Mewtwo Y. That is meaningful progress, but it applies specifically to the Y form. Pokémon GO’s official Mega Mewtwo rules state that the X and Y forms track Mega Levels and Mega Energy separately.
In practical terms, the included 500 Energy supports Mega Mewtwo Y. It does not grant the same progress to Mega Mewtwo X. That distinction is easy to miss if the reward is described only as “Mega Level 3.”
A guaranteed perfect Legendary removes the usual appraisal lottery for one of Pokémon GO’s most valuable Psychic-type attackers. It also gives newer or returning players a competitive foundation without asking them to grind repeated raids for better individual values.
That generosity also reduces the rarity of a perfect Mewtwo as a collection trophy. Still, the Special Background preserves an anniversary identity, while the Master Ball and Y Energy make the research useful beyond the encounter itself.
Times Square Players Get Different Rewards
Players who caught the in-person Times Square Mewtwo on July 9 can complete this research, but their replacement encounter has different stats and rewards. Leek Duck reports that those players receive 30 Mewtwo Candy instead of the Master Ball. The official announcement also says the Times Square background will return later, although it gives no date.
