Kingdom Hearts 4 Unveils Extended Trailer – Playable Mickey and Riku Join the Adventure

Square Enix has released an extended four-minute trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4, showcasing gameplay featuring Riku alongside Mickey, Donald, and Goofy. This footage debuted during a D23 panel, providing a detailed look at how this new installment will balance the adventures of Sora’s allies with their unique worlds.

One of the most exciting revelations is that Mickey Mouse will finally be a playable character. He will navigate a whimsical, book-like paper world where his abilities transform familiar Kingdom Hearts mechanics into playful puzzles. Mickey can create origami-paper copies of himself, shifting between paper-thin, giant, and tiny forms. Each transformation serves a practical purpose: a thin Mickey can slip through cracks in walls, while his other forms offer various navigation options throughout the stage.

Additionally, Mickey can transform into a paper airplane, enhancing the exploration aspect of the game. This combination of a beloved Disney character, a storybook dimension, and innovative movement mechanics encourages players to explore rather than simply rush to the next objective.

The D23 presentation also hinted at a more significant role for Maleficent. Series creator Tetsuya Nomura teased her involvement, stating, “I hope you look forward to her.” This suggests that players can expect a deeper narrative intertwined with familiar characters.

Riku’s presence in the trailer is notable, as it indicates he will play a substantial role rather than just a brief cameo. His inclusion, alongside the gameplay of Mickey, Donald, and Goofy, suggests that Kingdom Hearts 4 will feature a broader ensemble story, moving beyond a singular focus on Sora.

Square Enix also highlighted a Tokyo-like city area, one of the largest environments the team has created to date. The keychain action mechanics allow players to launch onto buildings, slide down power lines, and twirl around poles and signboards, promoting a more vertical and dynamic style of exploration. This movement system is integral to the gameplay experience, as Kingdom Hearts has always thrived on creating worlds that feel alive and inviting to traverse.

Kingdom Hearts 4 is set to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 in late 2027. The extended trailer successfully builds excitement by showcasing innovative gameplay ideas rather than merely relying on nostalgia. With Mickey’s unique transformations, Riku’s return, and a city designed for exploration, players have much to look forward to.

Which aspect excites you more: solving puzzles with playable Mickey in his paper world or Riku’s significant role in the story?
