Why Destiny 2 is locked at 30fps, even on PS4 Pro

Destiny 2 is shaping up to exceed its predecessor in many aspects, but one area won’t be getting much of an upgrade: the frame rate. And the developers are blaming the consoles’ lack of power.

The sequel to the online multiplayer first-person shooter Destiny will be locked at a lackluster 30fps on consoles. While Destiny 2 will run at 4K resolution on the PS4 Pro, the market’s most powerful console currently, it still won’t be able to reach 60fps.

Bungie leads Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy recently spoke withh IGN to answer a bunch of Destiny 2 questions, one of which was of course about the frame rate limitations.

“The PS4 Pro is super powerful, but it couldn’t run our game at 60”, Smith said. “Our game’s this rich physics simulation, with collision and players, networking, etc. It wouldn’t run… Not enough horsepower there yet.”

Noseworthy noted the PS4 Pro’s GPU is very powerful, which is why Bungie is able to deliver 4K on the console. He said the frame rate issue is “on the CPU side” of the Pro.

The PC version of Destiny 2 is looking even nicer now; it will support 4K and feature an uncapped frame rate, so you can get 60fps and beyond if your rig can handle it. The downside is that the game will likely release later on PC than on consoles, but no specifics have been given just yet.

Destiny 2 launches on September 8th for Xbox One, PS4, and PS4 Pro, and you can take the game for a test drive this summer when the beta goes live.

Stay tuned to A9K for the latest Destiny 2 news.

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
