Chrono Trigger Gets Surprise Steam Release Today

  • February 28, 2018

Square Enix has released Chrono Trigger to Steam today for a surprise launch. The new PC version of the classic RPG is available now on the Steam store for $14.99, with a limited edition version purchasable until April 2nd.

While many were initially excited about this sudden release of Chrono Trigger, players who downloaded the game have discovered it is a port of the mobile version, which was not received well by fans of the series. Square Enix upgraded the port with new controls and features, but it is still, at its core, a port of the mobile game. Know that going in.

Some features previously exclusive to the Chrono Trigger‘s Nintendo DS, Android, and iOS versions made their way to the PC release. These features include the DS version’s two bonus dungeons, as well as optimized graphics, keyboard and mouse support, and an autosave function. Additionally, the existing Android and iOS versions of Chrono Trigger will receive the new features and support Apple TV and cloud saves. The game is also now available on the Amazon App Store.

Those who purchase the game’s limited edition will receive composer Yasunori Mitsuda’s digital liner notes, six PC wallpapers, and a medley of music including “Far Off Promise,” “Wind Scene,” “Battle with Magus,” “Corridors of Time,” and “CHRONO TRIGGER.” Be sure to purchase the game before April 2nd if you want these bonuses.

Chrono Trigger originally released in 1995 on the SNES and was created by a great team of developers, including Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii and Akira Toriyama, best known for his work on Dragon Ball. In addition to Nintendo DS, Android, and iOS, the game has been ported to the original PlayStation and is now making its PC debut.

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
