China’s LandSpace Achieves ZQ-3 Booster Landing – A Milestone in Reusable Rockets

China’s private aerospace company LandSpace has successfully recovered the booster from its Zhuque-3 (ZQ-3) rocket after its December 2025 first-flight attempt ended in a crash. This achievement makes China the only nation with both a state-backed and a private operator that has a recovered orbital-class reusable rocket. According to Wccftech, the ZQ-3 booster returned to the launch site and landed on its extendable legs during the vehicle’s second flight on August 18, 2026.

This milestone positions LandSpace as the second Chinese entity to achieve such a feat, following the state-backed China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT) and its CZ-10B rocket. More importantly, it transforms a dramatic failure from just months ago into evidence that China’s commercial launch sector can recover, inspect, and potentially reuse a first stage rather than treating every booster as disposable hardware.

A Second-Flight Landing Changes the ZQ-3 Story

The ZQ-3’s first flight in December 2025 ended with the booster crashing. While a successful landing on the next flight does not erase the challenges ahead, it shifts the conversation from whether LandSpace can bring its rocket home to how consistently it can repeat this maneuver.

Reusable rocketry headlines often blur this distinction. The cinematic moment of getting a stage back onto land—the fire, the controlled descent, the legs meeting the pad—overshadows the reality that a usable recovery program depends on repeatability. The booster must survive ascent, separation, re-entry, and landing in a condition that makes refurbishment practical. This ZQ-3 booster landing is a crucial first proof point in that longer process.

LandSpace Built ZQ-3 Around Reusable Methane Propulsion

LandSpace’s ZQ-3 is a medium-lift, two-stage rocket that utilizes liquid methane and liquid oxygen, featuring a stainless-steel hull. Its first stage is powered by nine TQ-12A/B engines, while the upper stage employs a single TQ-15A/B vacuum engine.

The design presents a significant payload trade-off. The ZQ-3 can carry 12,500 kg when the booster returns to the launch site for landing, or 21,300 kg in fully expendable mode. LandSpace’s stated reuse goal is to enable the booster to be reused up to 20 times, enhancing the economic viability of its launch services.

This successful recovery not only highlights LandSpace’s capabilities but also underscores China’s growing ambitions in the space sector, as the nation continues to expand its presence in orbital launches. The implications of this achievement could reshape the competitive landscape of global space exploration and commercial launch services.
