Atlus comments on the Persona 5 Amazon issues

Some Persona 5 fans woke up yesterday to emails from Amazon telling them that their copy of the game had been cancelled. According to Amazon via ThisGenGaming, these versions of the game contain “dangerous goods”. The company doesn’t go into detail about what’s caused this decision but developer Atlus was quick to respond.

ThisGenGaming states that these copies of the game contained a “major defect” so Amazon returned them to their manufacturer. Amazon hasn’t confirmed this but it could explain why only a small number of people have been affected. The problem seems to be with a select group of Steelbook editions and Collector’s Editions.

Atlus has released a statement

Developer Atlus has already contacted Polygon to explain their side of the story. After investigating the issue, the developer and Amazon both confirm that the cancellation was just a mistake. Atlus told Polygon that “we’ve always known, that there’s nothing defective or ‘dangerous’ about our product”. According to the developer “No ‘mass cancellations’ of the premium and SteelBook editions have occurred”.

While Atlus has now provided some clarity on the issue, Amazon has been quiet. The company hasn’t confirmed what’s so ‘dangerous’ about these particular versions of the game. Hopefully Amazon will release a statement soon and we will update you as the situation unfolds.

Atlus has also said that affected users should contact Amazon directly for support. The developer hasn’t provided an explanation about what’s happening to the affected copies of the game or confirmed how many copies are now available for pre-order.

This is the second mistake from Amazon for the gaming industry. This follows all of the mistakes made during the Nintendo Switch debacle which occurred several weeks ago. During that issue, gamers didn’t get their console for launch date as they were initially promised by the company.
