The Best Speedruns of AGDQ 2023 Day 6
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (European Extreme All Camos Race) by ApacheSmash and Vermillion
As someone who lacks the patience needed to clear any Metal Gear Solid game on a difficulty higher than the easiest possible, watching speedruns sneak and speed their way through the franchise always boggles the mind. Such was the case with this “All Camos” speedrun race of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, played by veteran MGS runner ApacheSmash and relative newcomer and underdog Vermillion. Paired with professional commentary from other talented runners in the community, this race had it all. For providing us with a gripping race with lots of clench-worthy moments, this speedrun comfortably lands on our list of favorite runs from AGDQ 2023 day 6.
Final time: 1:15:30
Powerwash Simulator (6 Players, All Vehicles, No Soap) by Amyrlinn, Bullets, Biglaw, Enigma Requiem, AngelicKnight, and Acadiel
Powerwash Simulator was one of the most underrated games of 2022, with its relaxing concept and emphasis on group play. Using the ultra-powerful trident washer, six runners banded together to clean every vehicle in the game, power washing every vehicle in the game’s story mode. Equally silly and calculated, this world record-setting run was a cathartic early morning run that we loved watching during AGDQ 2023 day 6.
Final time: 33:31
Worms Armageddon (All Missions Any%) by RuffledBricks
We played a lot of this aloof strategy game when we were young, so watching runner RuffledBricks absolutely piece apart Worms Armaggedon was particularly enjoyable. Playing through every mission in the game, RuffledBricks set up incredibly calculated moves, forcing enemy worms to accidentally damage their teammates or slide off the map. As described by the commentators, it all feels like a Rube Goldberg machine of death, where one super precise attack sets off a chain of destructive consequences. The strategy and precision needed to pull off this run was more than enough to earn it a spot on this list.
Final time: 1:11:12
Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers (Any%) by Tecate
Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers is one of the few Nintendo Entertainment System games that we attempted to speedrun, but our efforts are elementary when compared to Tecate’s. Watching this runner blaze through this retro platformer was both nostalgic and impressive, filling our hearts with NES joy. Between the calculated hops, quick boss kills, and expert box chucking, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers was easily one of our favorite speedruns of AGDQ 2023 day 6.
Final time: 13:25
Super Mario Land (Any% Race) by EiP and Retroverse
Mario is a powerhouse in the speedrunning scene (as expected), but we rarely get to see runs of the Game Boy spin-off, Super Mario Land. As such, it was lovely to see runners EiP and Retroverse face off in this delightful platformer. Charged with positive energy and putting on a hell of a show, both runners performed at an extremely high level, offering a close race that can be watched in under 15 minutes. This excellent race offered a quick speedrun fix that was both quirky and fun to watch, so definitely check it out if you’ve got the time.
Final time: 12:33
Elephants and Snakes and Crocodiles (100%) by YourBoyRudy
Super Mario World fangames, or “kaizo Mario” as they are often called, are some of the most creative and difficult platformers available across the board. For AGDQ 2023 day 6, runner YourBoyRudy showcased Elephants and Snakes and Crocodiles, a delightful Mario fangame inspired by Mega Man 2. Completing all 13 exits in the game to achieve 100% completion, YourBoyRudy dissected a slew of extremely tough stages, accompanied by colorful graphics and catchy music. Well-executed and aesthetically pleasing for retro gaming fans, this kaizo speedrun was a wonder to watch.
Final time: 38:52
By the end of AGDQ 2023 day 6, the marathon raised over $1.4 million for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. There’s still one day of the marathon left and we expect it to be a big 24 hours for donations. We hope AGDQ 2023 clears $2 million and ends the marathon with a bang!
