AGDQ 2023 Continues with Spooky Games and Sonic Speedruns (Day 4 Recap)

  • January 12, 2023
  • Matthew Owen

Day 4 of AGDQ 2023 has come and gone, offering yet another enormously entertaining batch of speedruns to watch. Starting with a small block of horror games in the early morning and extending into the afternoon with Sonic the Hedgehog and a few Nintendo favorites, AGDQ 2023 day 4 offered both variety and quality. We watched more than our fair share of speedruns today, so here’s a list of some of our favorite runs from AGDQ 2023 day 4!

To watch any of the speedruns mentioned here, check out the official Games Done Quick YouTube channel or Twitch channel. There were lots of fantastic speedruns that we missed, so be sure to check out the other runs that aren’t mentioned here. For more awesome speedruns from the event, you can check out our other AGDQ 2023 daily recaps!

The Best Speedruns of AGDQ 2023 Day 4

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (End of Zoe Any%) by MaxyLobes

Resident Evil 7 at AGDQ 2023

We’re big fans of the horror block at AGDQ 2023, where we get to watch the spookiest speedruns as the marathon lurks deeper into the night. MaxyLobes, a horror game runner and GDQ regular, graced us with this Any% speedrun of the Resident Evil 7: Biohazard DLC, End of Zoe. Instead of scavenging for ammo and slurping down herbs, most of this speedrun is spent bare-knuckle boxing an assortment of horrifying creatures in the middle of the swamp. This compact run is perfect for a quick jolt of spooky speedrunning, delivered by one of our favorite speedrunners.

Final time: 20:28

Dead Space 3 (Any% Co-op Base Game + DLC) by sharkhat87 and SergeantRadish

Dead Space 3 at AGDQ 2023

Our favorite part about Dead Space 3 by far was the cooperative campaign, so we were pleased as punch when sharkhat87 and SergeantRadish stepped up to the stream. Trudging through the snow and hordes of necromorphs, both runners pulled their weight, showing off interesting glitches and accurate shooting. We especially enjoyed the co-op only skips and strategies, which were clearly explained through the playful banter and informative commentary. If you don’t have time to watch the base game speedrun, we also recommend sharkhat87 and SergeantRadish’s bonus run of the Awakened DLC, which clocks in at just over 15 minutes.

Final time: 1:59:02

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks (Any%) by Elfinout

Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks at AGDQ 2023

When you combine Mortal Kombat and 3D beat ’em up gameplay, you get action game glory in the form of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. Bringing this beloved game to a GDQ marathon for the first time, Elfinout tested his might and breezed across the finish line in under 20 minutes. This is a glitch-heavy run that features out-of-bounds movement, clipping through walls, and even an infinite kick glitch that Elfinout uses to float over hazards. Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is one of our favorite PS2-era games and this speedrun at AGDQ 2023 day 4 definitely lived up to the hype.

Final time: 17:57

Final Fantasy VII (Any% No Slots) by Zheal

Final Fantasy VII at AGDQ 2023

Each Games Done Quick marathon usually includes a lengthy JRPG speedrun and this nearly 7-hour-long run of Final Fantasy VII by Zheal was the big pick for AGDQ 2023. Playing the “No Slots” variation of the “Any%” category, Zheal was afforded limited magic, making battles harder and resulting in some interesting tactics. Glitches, skips, and other wacky tricks fill this massive speedrun, making it a perfect pick for second-screen viewing or a comfy all-day watch. Zheal did a fantastic job blazing through this speedrun, while the knowledgeable cast of commentators helped keep things lively and provided key information for understanding specific tricks. It might be a long one, but Final Fantasy VII was undoubtedly one of the best speedruns of AGDQ 2023 day 4.

Final time: 6:55:42

Sonic Unleashed (All Day Stages) by Speck

Sonic Unleashed at AGDQ 2023

The Sonic franchise is fast, there’s no question about it, but Speck’s “All Day Stages” speedrun of Sonic Unleashed was unbelievably quick. Besides running as fast as possible, Speck pulled off a variety of tricks, including boost-buffering, checkpoint skips, and more. Between the breakneck speed, fun skips, and wholesome commentary, Speck offered both splendid speedrunning and enormously positive vibes. If you love Sonic the Hedgehog and expert gameplay (who doesn’t?), definitely check out this fantastic speedrun from AGDQ 2023 day 4.

Final time: 22:37

Pokemon Yellow (Any% Glitchless) by PokeGuy

Pokemon Yellow at AGDQ 2023

This glitchless speedrun of Pokemon Yellow offered supremely comfy gameplay on Wednesday evening, showcasing precise strategy and calculated turn-based battles. Mainly riding a double-kicking Nidoking to victory, runner PokeGuy pounced from Pallet Town to the Elite Four at a speedy pace, picking up rare candies and other important items along the way. AGDQ 2023 has featured a lot of glitch-filled runs, so it was a refreshing change to see a straightforward glitchless attack of one of the most iconic Game Boy Color games of all time.

Final time: 2:01:24

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (Any%) by benstephens56

Ocarina of Time at AGDQ 2023

In our humble opinion, Ocarina of Time is on the shortlist when it comes to “the best game of all time”, so we can’t get enough Zelda speedruns. During this Any% run of the 3DS remake, benstephens56 makes short work of this iconic Nintendo title, showcasing a different route than the N64 original. In addition to staple Ocarina tricks like the “Navi Dive”, benstephens56 also pulls off tough 3DS-exclusive skips, occasionally nabbing them on the first try. With a live audience surrounding the runner and excellent commentary that explains each complicated glitch, this was easily one of our favorite speedruns of AGDQ 2023 day 4.

Final time: 30:47

Now that AGDQ 2023 has passed the halfway mark and day 4 has ended, the marathon has raised over $800,000 for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. We expect that donation total to skyrocket in the second half of AGDQ 2023, reaching upward of $1 – $2 million. Either way, it’s wonderful to see the generosity of the gaming and speedrun community on display.
