2TB Xbox One S Confirmed for August 2 Release

The most expensive Xbox One S is going on sale first, of course.

You know what? Sometimes it’s okay to trust in rumors. It turns out we can count on the 2TB Xbox One S is coming out August 2 after all. That’s according to an official blog post from Major Nelson earlier this morning. “Today, we’re pleased to announce that the highly-anticipated 2TB Xbox One S launch edition will begin hitting shelves in select regions on August 2. That means that all pre-orders will arrive on August 2 and, for those of you that haven’t yet, you can still pre-order a 2TB Xbox One launch edition through microsoftstore.com and select retailers.” By “select regions,” he means the US, Australia, and New Zealand, so we’re in the clear.

As for pre-orders, it’s hard to say whether or not you’ll need one. Very soon after E3 Microsoft mentioned that Xbox One S pre-orders were off to an “amazing start,” but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will sell out. They have to drum up a little extra excitement, after all. Microsoft will no doubt want to drive demand as high as possible, as they’re pushing the most expensive version of the Xbox One S out first – the 2TB launch edition will set you back a hefty $400 USD. Considering the fact that you can usually score an Xbox One for around half that price, I’m wondering if it’s worth paying the extra $200 for a box that’s 40% smaller. If playing Blu-ray movies on your 4K TV is that important to you, then go for it.

1TB and 500GB models will also be made available at some undisclosed later date for $350 and $300, respectively. The Xbox One S comes bundled with the new Xbox One Wireless Controller, and I think I’m more excited about that sleek new controller than I am about the actual console. It features a textured grip, improved wireless signal, and added Bluetooth functionality. Still no word yet as to when we can start ordering our custom controllers from the Design Lab, but you better believe I’ll be getting one. As soon as we hear about release dates for the additional Xbox One S models, we’ll be sure to let you know.
