August is gearing up to be an exciting — and kinda weird — month with its plethora of new video game releases. Read on for descriptions of top August releases, as well as the full list of launch dates. Also, be sure to check out what games you can grab for free on Xbox Live Gold and PS Plus this month.

August 1

August releases

Patapon Remastered is out today, August 1st, exclusively on PS4. This remastered port of the rhythm-based 2D platformer features improved 1080p visuals and 4K support on PS4 Pro. The game costs $15 and is available now on the PlayStation Store.

Next up is Tacoma, a sci-fi narrative adventure set aboard a high-tech space station in the year 2088. From the creator of Gone Home, Tacoma focuses heavily on storytelling and pulling the player into the narrative. It’s coming to Xbox One, PC, and Mac for $30.

August 8

Ark: Survival Evolved is one of several games releasing on August 8th. It launched via Steam’s Early Access in June 2015 and quickly became one of PC gaming’s most popular titles. As you might have guessed, it’s a survival game with first-person shooting, farming, crafting, and even dinosaurs. Pick it up on Xbox One, PS4, PC, Mac, or Linux for $30.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice comes from the makers of Odyssey to the West and DmC: Devil May Cry. Set in the Viking age, players will follow a Celtic warrior as she embarks on a haunting  quest into Viking Hell to fight for the soul of her dead lover. This game releases on PS4 and PC for $30.

August releases

LawBreakers is a class-based team shooter from the new studio Boss Key Productions, which was started by Cliff Bleszinski, the creator of Gears of War. It seems pretty similar to Overwatch but with gravity-defying mechanics and a $30 price point. Get it on PS4 and PC.

August 15

Agents of Mayhem is an open-world third-person shooter with lots of character. It’s from Volition, the team behind Saints Row. Explore the city of Seoul as a variety of Super Agents to thwart LEGION’s plans to take over the world. Get it on PS4, Xbox One, and PC for $60.

August releases

Sonic Mania brings back the beloved blue, speedy hedgehog to Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Sega’s going back to Sonic’s 2D roots with this new platforming adventure. Old school Sonic fans will have to pick this one up, and it’ll only set you back $20.

August 22

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is the stand-alone expansion to Uncharted 4, though you don’t play as Nathan Drake at all. Instead, you’ll take two female protagonists to India’s Western Ghats to recover an ancient artifact and keep it out of the hands of a warmonger. Get it only on PS4 for $40.

August 29

August releases

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle — It’s like XCOM but with weird rabbits and everyone’s favorite plumber. This is a strange one, but it’s one of August’s most exciting releases. Nintendo and Ubisoft teamed up to bring players this silly squad-based game with tactical, turn-based battles. Pick it up exclusively on Nintendo Switch for $60, though recent rumors hint at a possible price drop.

August 31

Life is Strange: Before the Storm is the prequel to the hit story-based Life is Strange and will focus on two of the game’s characters: Chloe Price and her best friend, Rachel Amber. Before the Storm will have three chapters, unlike the five-episode Life is Strange. Get it on PS4, Xbox One, and PC for $20.

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
