Tetsuya Nomura, the creator of Kingdom Hearts, is involved in a new Disney+ anime series that will expand the game universe with original material. On August 15, 2026, Insider Gaming reported Nomura’s memo confirming that members of the game’s creative staff have contributed to the forthcoming show.
This involvement indicates that the project is not simply Disney handing the keys to an unrelated animation team and relying on Keyblade imagery alone. Nomura stated he has been in close discussions with the scenario team, and the art team has also contributed when needed, including work on several new character designs made specifically for the anime.
New Faces Will Carry the Series Beyond the Games
According to Nomura’s memo, the Disney+ project will introduce characters created exclusively for the series. While he did not reveal plot details, he pointed fans toward the single piece of key art already released and encouraged them to “let your imaginations run wild” until more updates arrive.
Nomura emphasized, “We can’t discuss all the details just yet, but I’ve been in close discussions with the scenario team, including myself, and when needed, we’ve also enlisted the art team’s cooperation, even creating multiple new character designs specifically for this project.”
The wording is significant. Kingdom Hearts has always balanced Disney spectacle with Nomura’s original mythology, and an anime with new characters allows the series to tell a story that does not have to fit between existing game chapters. The key art may be the only concrete clue for now, but Nomura’s direct creative involvement suggests this will be more than a surface-level tie-in.
