Terraria Celebrates 20 Million Copies Sold, Teases Future Games

Devs say the Terraria franchise still has “so much life left in it.”

Terraria has passed 20 million sold units, developer Re-Logic announced recently.

Initially, Terraria was released in 2011 for Windows PC and was later ported and released for Xbox 360, PS3, PS Vita, iOS, and Android in 2013, for Windows Phone, PS4, and Xbox One in 2014, for OS X, Linux, and Nintendo 3DS in 2015, and for Wii U in 2016. Whew. That’s a lot of ports, all made possible by publisher 505 Games, who Re-Logic also thanked in their forum post.

The 2D sandbox adventure actually reached the 20 mil milestone at the end of 2016 but just shared the news in a forum post yesterday. Re-Logic thanked their community for all the support since Terraria’s launch in May 2011.

“It has been a pleasure to have all of you along on the journey thus far,” said the studio, “and we are really looking forward to continuing down that path.”

Re-Logic noted that 8.5 million of those 20 million were sold in the 18 months since the major 1.3 update for PC. It added a ton of new items, characters, bosses, events, and the brand new Expert world mode, as well as significant changes to the game’s mechanics and interface.

As for the future of Terraria, Re-Logic stated update 1.3 for console and mobile is “just around the corner.” They also said both the game and franchise have “so much life left in [them],” teasing more updates and games.

News on the progress of Terraria Otherworld is approaching, but they weren’t quite ready to share any details yet. Otherworld will combine elements of sandbox gameplay with RPG and strategy elements in a world “overrun by a malevolent force that has corrupted nature itself.”

Otherworld has been in the works for a while, but even the 2015 pre-alpha trailer, posted below, looks awesome. We’ll keep you posted on any big Terraria news, but until then, keep up the good diggin’.

Mischa McGill

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
