Super Mario Maker 3DS Won’t Support 3D

We’re not quite sure how 3D would have worked anyway.

Super Mario Maker is the type of game that could only work with Nintendo’s hardware. The course creation tools are perfectly suited to a touch screen and stylus, and millions of you have enjoyed creating your own unique levels. It was only a matter of time before Mario Maker came to the 3DS.

While somewhat limited in scope compared to its Wii U counterpart, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS has the obvious advantage in its portability. Being able to craft your perfect Super Mario World style course while on the bus or between flights is an incredible prospect. However, in addition to being barred from downloading courses online, Super Mario Maker 3DS has another interesting limitation. The game can’t actually be played in 3D.

You heard that right. The official box art for Super Mario Maker 3DS was recently revealed, and you can clearly see at the bottom a little disclaimer that reads “Plays only in 2D.” While it may seem shocking to some, it’s worth noting that 3D effects do take a toll on performance, and Mario Maker‘s creation tools allow for some jam-packed level designs with a lot of moving parts. It’s a little disappointing, but I can’t say I’m surprised. I would have been playing with the 3D slider all the way down, anyway.
