Undead Labs showed a new State of Decay 3 trailer during the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase. The cinematic sequence used in-game assets and represented the sort of encounter the studio expected players to face during a four-player co-op session.
The series’ permadeath system returns, placing every survivor at risk when a supply run goes wrong. Undead Labs also described a larger shared world intended to support more than one player-owned community.
The technical foundation
State of Decay 3 is being developed with Unreal Engine 5. The Coalition has assisted Undead Labs with the technology, while knowledge shared with Obsidian has informed parts of the shared-world design.
The studio highlighted more reactive combat, improved animation fidelity and more detailed zombie damage. It did not announce native 4K output, a locked 60fps mode, Lumen settings or a final weather-simulation specification.
That distinction matters. A trailer assembled from in-game assets can represent the intended visual target without demonstrating final frame pacing or console performance. Those claims require direct gameplay capture or confirmed platform modes.
