Skyrim for Nintendo Switch Will Have Amiibo Support & Motion Controls

The first big piece of Nintendo news for E3 2017 came out of Bethesda’s press conference last night with an exciting new trailer, below. Be sure to read up on the rest of Bethesda’s announcements in our wrap up.

The Nintendo Switch version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was one of the first titles confirmed for the Switch at its reveal, and it now has its first official trailer that showcases some of its special features that take advantage of the console’s hybrid nature.

Of course, you’ll be able to play Skyrim both on your TV at home and on-the-go with the Switch’s portable tablet mode.

Also, two features we weren’t quite expecting — amiibo support and Joy-Con motion controls — are highlighted in the trailer as well. Various series of amiibo will be compatible with the game, including The Legend of Zelda series, the Breath of the Wild series, the Zelda 30th Anniversary series, and the Super Smash Bros. series. The listed amiibo can be scanned into the game to unlock themed loot, such as the Link outfit, shield, and weapon shown in the trailer.

The Switch’s Joy-Con controllers will allow players to use motion controls in Skyrim for the first time ever. The trailer shows a player holding one Joy-Con half in each hand and using motion controls to draw weapons, swing swords, and fire arrows at enemies.

Skyrim was originally released in 2011 and has seen several major DLC’s — Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn. All of these official add-ons will be included in the Switch version of the game.

Little information was offered beyond the trailer, so we don’t yet know the resolution, frame rate, or other specs just yet. Check back with A9K for the latest gaming news.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for Nintendo Switch is due out Holiday 2017.

Mischa McGill

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
