Sign up now to test the PS4’s next “major” update

Update 4.5 enters beta this February!

A “major” system software update is coming soon to PS4, according to the official PlayStation Blog. It’s version 4.5, and you can register to test out the beta version before it’s available publicly.

The last big system update, version 4.0, was in September 2016. With it came a menu redesign, folders for managing games and apps, a PlayStation Music update, the ability to transfer system data to a new PS4, and stream support at 720p and 60 FPS.

Sony didn’t indicate what updates version 4.0 will contain, only that it will have some “improvements and new features.” However, the lack of information isn’t stopping console owners from speculating wildly.

Backwards compatibility has been begged for since the PS4’s release. That’d be a pretty massive “new feature” for Sony to throw at us, but we’d welcome it with tears of joy. Other users want the ability to change their PSN ID. I’d say the appeal of the ID “putmydikinurmouf” wears off after a couple years…

Registration for the beta is open now until “early February.” If you do register for the beta test, keep in mind you have to be 18 or older and have a valid email associated with your PSN account. Additionally, there is no guarantee you’ll be selected, so you might not hear from Sony at all after you register.

The actual beta will launch in February, at which time registration for testing will close.

We don’t know when the system update will be available for everyone to download. Food for thought: The 4.0 update launched publicly in September after a month of beta-testing. Although, we can’t say what Sony is doing with this update or how long it will be in beta.

Are you signing up to test the beta? Were you approved? Let us know in the comments!

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
