Sega Announces Classic Games Coming to Switch, Plus Sega Genesis Mini

Sega is using Sega FES 2018 in Tokyo, Japan to share some big news regarding the company’s classic games and consoles. Last night, Sega revealed that a slew of retro games, including Sonic the Hedgehog and Phantasy Star, are coming to Nintendo Switch. Additionally, the company is releasing the nostalgic console, Sega Genesis Mini, later this year.

More than fifteen classic Sega titles will be making their way to Nintendo Switch under the new Sega Ages lineup, which is under the control of Studio M2. Studio M2 was responsible for previous Sega re-releases like the 3D Classics Collection for Nintendo 3DS systems and the Sega Ages series for PlayStation 2.

Although Sega promised over fifteen games for Nintendo Switch, only three specific titles were officially confirmed at Sega FES — Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star, and Thunder Force 4. The Sega Ages lineup will start releasing on the Switch sometime this summer, although this has only been confirmed for Japan so it’s unclear if the retro games will see a Western release.

As for the Sega Genesis Mini, pictured above, the only detail we known is it simply exists. No word yet on its hardware or what games we could play on the compact retro system. The Sega Genesis, known as the Mega Drive outside of North America, was a 16-bit home console made by Sega in 1988. Some of its more notable games include Sonic the Hedgehog titles, Gunstar HeroesPhantasy Star 2, and Streets of Rage.

Same as the Sega Ages lineup for Nintendo Switch, the Genesis Mini was only confirmed for Japan as the Mega Drive Mini. It’s likely other regions will be able to buy the retro console as well, but for now we can only speculate. We’ll keep you updated on the latest news as it is announced.

Mischa McGill

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
