On December 26, 2024, 19-year-old Sam Konstas made a sensational Test debut for Australia against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Opening the batting, Konstas scored a rapid 60 runs off 65 balls, reaching his half-century in just 52 deliveries—the third-fastest by an Australian debutant.
Konstas’s aggressive approach was evident as he fearlessly took on India’s premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, employing audacious ramp shots that thrilled the crowd. His performance provided Australia with a strong start, contributing to a first-session score of 112 for 1.
The debut was not without controversy. During his innings, Konstas was involved in a mid-pitch collision with Indian veteran Virat Kohli, leading to a heated exchange. The incident drew criticism towards Kohli and is under review by ICC officials, potentially leading to disciplinary action.
Prior to his Test debut, Konstas had an impressive domestic record. He played for New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield and the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League (BBL). In the 2024–25 BBL season, he made a notable impact by scoring the fastest fifty for the Sydney Thunder, reaching the milestone in just 20 deliveries.
Following his standout performance, Konstas’s popularity has surged, particularly on social media. His Instagram account, @samkonstas5, has seen a significant increase in followers, reflecting his growing fan base and the widespread admiration for his fearless batting and composure under pressure.
Konstas’s debut has not only energised the Australian lineup but also captivated cricket fans worldwide, suggesting a promising future in international cricket.
